Origin - In the 19th century it was common to begin a race or a fight by dropping a hat or sweeping it in a rapid downward motion.

Origin - the Pale of Dublin included the city and a hinterland directly controlled by the English colonists. Beyond this was the domain of Irish chieftains, dragons, leprechauns, etc.
