I am in a fellowship where we hug very frequently, every time two friends meet, there is a greet hug and then a goodbye hug. It is an essential part of our friendship.
My experience is that a little off centre is always good, in fact a natural thing , so that both faces find a shoulder and nit a head to head clash.
My habit is I only offer a hug to a woman when she is eager and shows it, or if we know each other quite well.
I bend a little so that there is ample free space to avoid crushing. It works quite well, but some say "no no, uninhibited bear hug" ! Well I prefer to be cautious. Idea is to feel good, no need to risk discomfort for someone.
