Do you think introversion and extroversion are genetically based ?

I just received an update from ancestry.com indicating that my dna indicates I’m "probably an introvert" (in fact, I am). Curious, considering that my youngest sister, who comes from the same dna source is very much an extrovert and always has been. 🤔

On Ancestry (I believe), they're comparing it to any other known possible DNA matches (I'm swimming in the ocean of genealogy myself) and the way they answer questions.

But yes, research indicates some absolutely have a penchant for introversion. This is seen in the same areas of the brain that also affect addiction, ADHD and some other conditions (which is not to imply a causal relationship). It just seems some people simply tend to isolate, and typically without any adverse consequences. They do what works for them just as social butterflies do what they do.

That just tells me the Ancestry is batting 50/50. If they would have checked your younger sis they would have got it wrong.
Are personality traits due to nature or nurture? My guess is the nurture is at least as importan.

Despite having the same DNA source as our siblings, there will be variations in the composition of our DNA (unless we're identical twins).
My younger brother is bald, while I have a full head of hair.
He's about a foot taller than our youngest sister.
He's an extrovert and I'm an introvert.
Considering the many differences in actual genetic makeup among siblings, it might factor into whether a particular person is an introvert or an extrovert.
@DragonFruit That makes sense, and it explains why when the four of us tested the combination of ethnicities were in different amounts, even though we all came from the same two parents. But I thought personality was different, more a matter of life experiences. My brother and middle sister are introverts, too.

@bijouxbroussard In my family, only one sister and my brother are extroverted...the other 6 are introverts.

I believe genetics strongly influence personality, but so do other factors. How the parents behave towards others in their social circle, birth order of siblings, family communication styles, school experiences, cultural expression and the neighbourhood all have their effects.
Genes are a complex mix and can recombine in many ways within one family.

I would imagine that introversion is innate, whereas extroversion probably has to be learned. So that was a fairly obvious statement. I have three sisters and we are all very different in the ways in which we present ourselves publicly.
@SunshineGirl I dunno. This sister was an extroverted baby. You know how small kids tend to hang back behind family members in large gatherings of adults ? Not this one. Three years old, introducing herself, shaking folks’ hands. She has other issues, but has never lacked what they used to call "moxie". 😄

I never hear of that.. i always presumed it was an environmental thing like how people around them treated them and valued their opinions or not..
@YoMomma That’s what I’d always thought, as well. My sister’s claimed that as the youngest of four kids she’s had to “shout a little louder to be heard”. 😊

My youngest lil brother is super outgoing too 😅@bijouxbroussard

@bijouxbroussard @YoMomma My 3 youngest siblings are all introverts...the extroverts are the 3rd and 5th of the eight siblings.

So... Did they base their indication on your ancestry, or your genes? Because you have identical ancestry as your sister, but not identical DNA. They have your sample, not hers.
@Abstraction This is what it said:

Introversion & Extroversion
Your DNA suggests you may be more introverted.

Did You Know? Extroverts tend to focus more on the outer world of people and things, while introverts tend to focus more on the inner world of ideas and images.
Science Says
Research suggests that extroverts may more be motivated by rewards than introverts are, potentially due to a difference in sensitivity to a chemical called dopamine.

Genetics and Other Factors

Here’s a breakdown of how genetic and non-genetic factors may influence this trait.

Genetic Factors

For this test, we looked at the DNA of more than 185,000 people who answered a survey question about introversion and extroversion. The participants were placed into one of two groups: people who said they were more introverted, and people who said they were more extroverted. By comparing their DNA, we identified over 10,000 markers associated with introversion and extroversion and created a model that predicts the likelihood of each result.

Other factors

Environmental factors play a role in introversion and extroversion, but the exact size of that role is still unknown.
Unknown genetics
It's likely that some other markers also play a role. As we learn more, there may be new or updated information about this trait.
Abstraction · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard Ok this suggests it is on your genetic markers, and that therefore your sister would probably have a different result. Although environmental factors can play a role in introversion/ extroversion as well.
Graylight · 51-55, F
@bijouxbroussard It seems to be stating that the aggregate of those with similar genetic profiles also tend to answer positively to the same question regarding intro-/extroversion. It sounds as id their data has uncovered a pattern, but assumes no causal relationship, merely a correlational one right now.

It's interesting and this all lays the groundwork for future work. I was asked about the length of the 2nd toe on one foot. Bizarre. I think right now we're in a huge data-gathering period and hopefully it'll lead to some exciting insights down the line.

Probably some genetics or brain shape would influence personality, but I think nurture over nature contributes more to that personality attribute.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
My dad's family has historically been the quiet and introverted side, which is where I most likely got it from.

More nurture than nature.

My mom was and extrovert, and my dad an introvert...I'm somewhere in between....so yeah!
GermanAf · 26-30, M
My entire family on both sides is very extroverted with the exception of one of my uncles. I have seen this man once and my parents told me he's weird and a loner... Hmmmmm...
@GermanAf Wow, that must’ve been difficult for him.
GermanAf · 26-30, M
@bijouxbroussard Probably knowing my family hehe. Probably would've done us both good to connect a bit but oh well. No one knows where he lives now, but apparently he has a kid with his wife that he also apparently has.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
It makes sense. My ex-wife was adopted, but we found her biological family. They did not know each other at all for the first 25 years, but she looks like them, walks like them, etc., right down to the weird way she liked to hang pictures on walls slightly crooked...her biological mom did that, too. It was creepy.

To me, it's 80/20 nature vs. nurture...or even more so.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
I think to some extent, it is, but we can't forget that genes mutate. I personally think that introversion is a dominant gene, whereas extroversion is a recessive gene. It's the only way to explain how two extroverted parents can have an introverted kid from a genetic standpoint.
MethDozer · M
It can be both a combination of nurture and nature.
