How Old Are You? I Am Old Enough To Remember When I Could Mail A Letter For 5 Cents…

I'm old enough to remember "party lines" and eavesdropping on your neighbor's conversations.

ArtieKat · M
@SumKindaMunster My father was a doctor so we always had an exclusive line.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@ArtieKat we lived in a couple of rural areas and a private line was not available.
@SumKindaMunster lol, yes!
Adrift · 61-69, F
I remember when a McDonald's big mac was more than I could eat.
I looked it up on line and yes Big Macs have had a 40% shrinkage since the 1970s.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@Adrift I remember McDonald's ads for change back from your dollar. Then it was change back from a five. Now what is it, change back from your $20?
exexec · 70-79, C
When we were in college, my wife and I wrote each other every day. We could afford it back then with 5 cent stamps and cheap paper. No way at today's price for stamps.
exexec · 70-79, C
@cherokeepatti I buy stamps by the roll, so 100 stamps hit my credit card a heavy blow.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@exexec hadn’t been that long since I bought a 20-pack for less than $10…2017…
exexec · 70-79, C
@cherokeepatti I buy the rolls to use in my grandfather's antique copper stamp dispenser. A roll lasts a long time.

I've lost track of how much our mail costs - but I did take note last week that letters sent by second-class postage will only be delivered 3 times a week (down from 6)

I'm old enough to have done 'it' and young enough to do 'it' again.
How much is a stamp now! I remember when they were 10 cents!
Doh! 78cents! I missed that part!! That's crazy!
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
I remember when the price of postage went from six cents to eight. Coming home from school I would stop and get a candy bar and a canned Coke for a quarter.
MommaBear · 26-30, F
I’m 26.. old enough to know better and too young to care 😂
Dino11 · M
Coke was a nickle out of the machine,
Gas was $.30/gal, cigarettes were
$.25 a pack, mixed drinks $.50,
Homes $2500 in small farm town,
Cars at $1000
therighttothink50 · 56-60, M
Old enough to have a clicker remote and black and white tv.
Musicman · 61-69, M
@therighttothink50 We didn't have a color TV until I was 14. We didn't have a color TV with a remote until I was in my early 20's.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@therighttothink50 You had a clicker?
hippyjoe1955 · 70-79, M
yes but post cards were cheaper.
Musicman · 61-69, M
I use to have a little Yamaha dirt bike. I remember riding it to the local gas station and filling it up for $0.26 and thinking gas was expensive. Then getting a Coke from the vending machine.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Looks like a "good anytime" stamp was a better investment than buying Tesla.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Heartlander Yeah was thinking I should have bought a couple hundred a few years ago
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@cherokeepatti

If you compare the history of general inflation Vs postage, postage rates have consistently increased like twice the general inflation rate.

I haven't checked, but it would be interesting to compare the cost of a Pony Express letter to California to the cost of an overnight express to the same address.
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Nowadays everytime we read the news a letter carrier has been arrested for mail theft
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MarineBob When I worked at the university & rented an apartment from the university I would mail the rent check to them. I was working in athletic and there was a mail box outside and I dropped my bill in there, very convenient. One day I got a notice that my rent was overdue. I called them and they hadn’t received it so I called the bank and had a stop put on the check (it hadn’t cleared) and walked over to the bursar’s office and paid in person at lunch. About 3 weeks later the campus newspaper had a story about mail being stolen and an arrest and it was a student that they had hired to go around and collect all of the mail at the various mail boxes (and take it the central post office on campus) and also drop off the mail in the various dorm areas. I figure he was mostly targeting mail that was going to the students especially cards in colored envelopes because grandma’s love to tuck a bill or two in a card when they send one.
