Check In - What's your rent payment?

My apartment decided to raise the rent so I'm curious, what is your rent payment? How many bed/bath? What area? I say area because I am sure no one wants to disclose super precise locations but maybe state at least?

I know my rent is reasonable and I'm going to stay regardless. But normally they only raise it $50 every 12 months. This time it was $160 and I am so upset. UGH

I live in Oregon. My landlords are farmers. My SIL lived in our house before us. We got it when she moved. Landlord hasnt raised the rent in the last 20 years. We have two story with 2 bedrooms downstairs and 1 big room upstairs. House was built in 1893 but has been remodeled. It sits on 4 fenced acres with a barn, shop, and separate garage. Has its own well so no paying for water.

Rent is $1,200 per month.
I love my landlords.
@morrgin That is amazing!!

@SwampFlower Note I said apartment. Not house.
@HellsBelle yeah a lot of people arent properly reading your post

@HellsBelle I guess i am DQ--have a mortgage but I would say if your rent increase outpaces inflation you are being price-gouged Take 160 as a percentage of your current rent. If that is a higher number than the overall inflation rate (wich is about 3 percent) than the renter tacked in extra costs outside of "rising costs from inflation"

I am not sure if there is anyting renter can do about this. but it feels like you probably are being price gouged at 160

on a seperate note rent should match the GDP of the city in an index format. If you google the GDP of your metro (or town) you can index and benchmark it against average rent rates nationwde to see how reasonable your rent is given your local economy . Of course you have to adjust for size of your place and location (downtown vs outskirts of town)

the google search terms would be:
1) (insert city) rank for GDP USA
2) avg rent for (type of apartment ) in USA at (insert location example downtown)

contrast 1 and 2 from your situation to national averages.

We rent out two floors of an old Victorian in a New England resort town. Each apartment is roughly 1500 sq/ft has its own kitchen, laundry living room and 2-3 bedrooms. Rent is $1800-$2,000 each.

The main floor we keep unrented so we can stay there if desired, or perhaps friends. Her daughter probably uses it more than we do.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
Right now it's $1270 per month, electric and cable not included.
In about 2 months, when I renew my lease, it will probably go up another $100 per month.

I'm renting a 2bdrm/1bath house about 1200 sqft in Memphis, TN for $1200 a month, yard maintenance included. Hasn't gone up in 3 years. Great landlord.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
a lot depends on where you live and what algorithm is used. or last increase was 15%, we have a new lease this feb, if it is that high, we will move!

@KingofBones1 WOW someone needs therapy
€481 a month for 1 combined bed/living room and a bathroom totaling 37m².
@NerdyPotato small addition: there are two sets of laws for housing costs that changed independently over the years. The costs for existing contracts can only be increased by a small percentage twice a year. That raised mine from €390 to €480 in the 13 years I lived here. The maximum costs for new contracts is a complicated calculation based on surface and facilities. That has become much more lenient for landlords. If I decided to leave, the next renter would probably pay around €650 a month for the same apartment, and so would I for the next one if I went for something similar.

But I know my mortgage is less than some apartment costs, and I've got 4/3 acre and ~ 2k ft^2

Oh, just over $1250, near Ann Arbor
HellsBelle · 36-40, F
@SomeMichGuy This post is for people who actually rent, but thank you. Hence, "your" rent.
@SomeMichGuy omg people she said rent
@starbucksgirly Yes. And I said rents here are more than ~$1250/mo.
1,200 1 bed and 1 bath
@HellsBelle im in NC but ive been in this apartment since 2016ish when the rent was 967. If youre just moving here now out of the blue then youll definitely be starting 1500 but thats not including fees. Once fees are added 1600 1 bed. Are you looking to move ?
HellsBelle · 36-40, F
@starbucksgirly Same! My rent lately was 850. The area grew and now its 1300-1500. I thought about moving but they have me in a choke hold. The apt is outdated as far as looks but its still too good to let go.
@HellsBelle mine is outdated too that’s what's making me want to move. I hate carpet but im familiar with the neighborhood. But honestly i work hard and deserve nice things so moving is in the future bc i need a change of scenery

Here in Stockholm Sweden, a typical apartment's rent is based on the square foot area of the apartment itself which works out to be about $1.00 USD per square foot.

A 300 square foot bachelor apartment would therefore rent for $300 USD per month, which includes all utilities, taxes and an underground parking spot.

A 3 bedroom, one bathroom, 1200 square foot apartment would rent for $1200 USD per month, which includes one underground parking spot.
HellsBelle · 36-40, F
@SandWitch Nice!
