Do you hand mend any of your clothing?

SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Yes, and quite a lot of my clothes I made myself in the first place 🙂
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@originnone Mainly from my mother and a bit at school. You can learn basic techniques from the internet, but the only way to develop is through lots of practice.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@SunshineGirl That's really cool! I can do a little sewing to fix things or change little things on clothing, but creating entire pieces is a lot of work and planning! That's really admirable.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@Scribbles Thanks 🙂 I started out by making clothes for my dolls, then I scaled things up 🙂
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Sure, I mend little holes at times if the rest of the clothing is in good repair. I can hem things and take seams apart and redo things. If it's not in good repair it goes in the rag bin for changing or checking the oil on the car, and dirty jobs like that.

When I was a teenager, a favorite hobby of my best friend and I was to go to the thrift store and buy a boring dress or shirt or pants with a cute pattern, draw out how we wanted it to look and then try to resew things. It was pretty fun. And not a very expensive hubby considering the clothes and thread would be like a couple dollars. Some didn't quite turn out right. But it was fun. but some were pretty cool. We should have taken photos back then. Lol

I still use such skills, on rare occasions. I recently bought a new dress on clearance that was beautiful. One problem was the line under the bust and shoulder needed to be raised like an inch to fit right and look right because it didn't sit right. and the silhouette wasn't right without raising it. So I was able to do that for myself and it looks gorgeous. Same with a crop top I made around that time too. I should send a photo to my childhood best friend and show her 😂 she'll get a kick out of it that. #throwback

I used to, when I was single and dirt poor. I used to sow the holes in my socks.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@calicuz I did too and usually ended up with a little lump that rubbed a blister on my feet. I think that’s why I stock up on socks when I find some good ones on clearance. Probably have a lifetime supply now.
calicuz · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti

Yeah, now I just throw them away and buy new new ones.
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
Yes I hate throwing anything away if it still has plenty of wear in it . I hate when you buy trackies or shorts and its not long before the elastic waist wears out . I buy new elastic and rethread . Jeans look great with patches as do overalls no need to throw away or if their really badly damaged in the leg turn them into shorts . Ladies turn them into a pair of shorts or short skirt . There are all sorts of ways to reuse old clothes just takes some imagination .
Rhode57 · 56-60, M
@Scribbles Me too . Some into very short shorts that leave nothing to the imagination when you sit down it all hangs out as I am always commando , I dont own underwear .
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Rhode57 Good for you,
Too much info for me though. 🤣😂
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Rhode57 btw, I love the flowers in your profile pic. I plan to try to Google what kind of flower they are later.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
Yes, I even have a sewing machine but I never feel like using it. Just grab a needle and thread, sit in front of the TV and fix it.
I will see buttons back on, but that’s about it. If something is so worn that the fabric tears, it can’t really be repaired.
itsok · 31-35, F
I have, and if it’s a simple mend and something I enjoy wearing, I do
originnone · 61-69, M
@itsok I took a sewing class years ago, but I never learned enough to do it on my own. I'm retiring and home to improve at it.
Oster1 · M
I do and many other other things, I learned how to use sewing machines, years ago! 😊
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
I have before. I keep all my holed socks and convert them into material for other things
originnone · 61-69, M
@GuyWithOpinions I always had this idea about taking dryer lint and making something....
GuyWithOpinions · 31-35, M
@originnone makes a decent fire starter. Just wrap it in a tissue or some paper. Maybe some wood chips.
originnone · 61-69, M
@GuyWithOpinions hmm...I'll try that.
Trekker · 51-55, M
I do, though most of my patching recently has been on coats and I use vinyl glue patches for them.

I use sewing needle for small things.
malizz · 70-79, M
Yes in my student days: can't be bothered now.
originnone · 61-69, M
@malizz That's wear I was, but I wish I could reattach a button.
malizz · 70-79, M
@originnone A button's a doddle but I have one that's been sitting for months waiting to be sewn back on.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
It’s actually a great idea for expensive items.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Sometimes I do, a few stitches when needed.
WillaKissing · 56-60
I do. No choice, I live alone.
meggie · F
Only sewing buttons on
originnone · 61-69, M
@meggie I can't even do that and I want to learn.
I hem my own clothes by hand
ArishMell · 70-79, M
Occasionally, though not very well.
SW-User
omg no...I hate sewing
originnone · 61-69, M
@SW-User I want to learn some simple aspects....
SW-User
If I want to keep it I do
I hand hem trousers
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Occasionally, especially something I like too much to toss out or if it’s a small tear.
Azlotto · M
Yes. My going to Walmart clothing has been mended several times with duct tape.

Barely noticeable.
