What's your newest Hobby?
I love antiques, though our collecting interests are a wee bit different. This past year, mine have centered about collecting a 100 year old plus apple press for pressing cider which I"m about finished restoring, a 2 h.p. hit and miss engine, the kind that you hook up with a belt on the drive wheel to power other belt fed pieces from the early 20th century, and my latest acquisition (and total love).....a 1940 Zenith shortwave radio who's style is nothing short of bodacious.
Antiques, such as my radio have such a sense of grace and style that is non-existant today. Probably the "why" of collecting on my part.

A tube radio, that can capture radio stations locally, but also those of Europe on a different band by selection. This photo is not mine, but it is the exact same radio. I was just too lazy to take a photo and jump the hoops to put it on here.Antiques, such as my radio have such a sense of grace and style that is non-existant today. Probably the "why" of collecting on my part.

@HumanEarth My skills are nil H.E. I have zero skills with anything electronic. For the sake of safety, I assume I'm going to have to replace all those original tubes as well as everything else on that mother board, plus power cord.
With your experience, what do you think (ballpark) I'd be looking at in terms of a complete chassis overhaul between parts and labor? Any idea?

@Freeranger Vacuum tube are super rare and expensive. You test each tube. You would use a vacuum tube tester

I actually own one like this teater
You don't replace what you call the motherboard like you would a computer. Them are even more rare.

With them your better off rebuilding the circuitry. Fixing cold or loose solder joints, replacing broken wires.
Another part you will need replacement vacuum tube sockets

Its really not that hard to rebuild a radio

I always been into cameras. If it takes film and don't need batteries to work. Thats for me.
Like my favorite cameras are from 1840 though 1920
Them you make your own film
Like my 1907 Rochester Optical Company 8X10 camera.
Here is another one I have from 1899. Its by the Sun Beach Manhattan Optical Company

It's not new exactly. It's been a hobby for years now, but still passionate about it: cycling and paddleboarding.
Cool Lego sets. They remind me of the kind of space Legos, my older brothers would drool over at the store that we couldn't afford.

@Scribbles A hobby like that keeps you in shape. (Maybe I should think about getting a bike.)

I have been getting into wasgij jigsaws. And have been combing the Op-shops for them. And swapping them with other people who are into them as well.

I had the LL928.

@Prisoner1972
I had it as a kid, and my little brother had sets, too. And not just space, but city and castle sets. Over time all the pieces were gathered in a large box, which we would dump on the dining room table. The mound of pieces itself became a play scene, like a post-apocalyptic rubble pile.
I made Star Wars objects well before such sets were created. Lots of tie fighters made of three flat pieces, 2x1's for the 2 solar panels, 1x1 for the cockpit in between. And tiny X-wings and a Falcon. And of course star destroyers.
Like this, but I used a rectangular piece for the cockpit.

I do not know what became of that box. I think my brother sold it long ago.

My new hobby is trying to remember where I put stuff, including notes that I need for my old hobby, genealogy.
Prisoner1972 · 51-55, M
@exexec I was looking at genealogy with my aunt back in the days. But I kept running into skeletons in the closet.
exexec · 70-79, C
@Prisoner1972 The skeletons make it fun!

@Musicman Then tell us about your old hobbies. (As long as they're legal and not morally wrong.)
@Prisoner1972 Lol!!! No worries there. I love photography. Landscapes, classic cars and architecture are my favorite subjects. I enjoy going to classic car shows. My wife and I have a motorhome. We enjoy loading up and going out for a few days just to explore and have fun. 🙂
