Seniors are the most precious people

Besides babies and toddlers lol. 馃挄
I went to my dad's nursing home today and because it was 70 degrees, a few residents were out in the garden area in their wheelchairs. It was just so touching seeing them enjoy the sun.

They often roll in their chairs up and down the halls and are so frail..and often look really sad. It is heartbreaking knowing they can't do anything but sit in their chair or go to the activity room for music. But just wondering about their past and what they were like years ago touches my heart 馃槩馃挀

i think we need to do better taking care of our seniors. (well in canada anyway) when my mom spent her last 2 months of her life in the hospital they kept making discharge plans with me. mom was living with me. they wanted to make plans to make my apartment "senior" friendly. she was facing leg amputations and her lungs were a mess. trust me it wasn't a good scene. they would send homecare to my place 3 times a day. she had it before and it was terrible. i told the hospital and her social worker she needs to be put in a home....minimum wait was 6 months...in hindsight i'm kind of glad she died in hospital as her life at home would have been a living hell....she would have wanted it that way....love you mom 鉂わ笍馃槩

@Jeephikelove that something we definitely need to fix. we need to make that top priority for our seniors. tbh....i'm afraid of getting old...i have no one to take care of me.

@beermeplease they鈥檙e working on it, Covid was a huge eye opener and now people are paid to go to school to be a Healthcare Assistant. The problem is there are still people doing it who shouldn鈥檛. Ya if you don鈥檛 have kids or nephews and/or nieces who you can rely on it makes it very hard.

@Jeephikelove when my mom had homecare workers show up here, they did nothing really. one time 2 of them spent a ton of time in her bedroom while she sat on living room couch. she felt humiliated when they bathed her in shower while she sat in chair. just turned water on and said good enough...get out...they did nothing when they cleaned or cooked. all this while i was at work. she begged me to cancel the service...which i did. that was a really tough time for my brother and i.
My father, who is a Korean war veteran, has a very interesting life, which he shares with anyone who wants to listen. I have worked in many care homes because I was a CNA, so my ears perk up when they wish to share. Because I am so tall, I squat down, look them in the eyes and see the smiles they express through showing me pictures of their children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren, it's a reward to feel trusted with their care.Your topic is something I can talk about for hours, so I will stop here. Yet it feels good to honor our elders and love them as they are

Some have some very amazing pasts, we had a resident that was a German translator in WWII and she translated a telegram intercepted which was detailing a midnight bombing on England and it was thwarted because of her.

A couple of the residents at my mom鈥檚 nursing home had been in the concentration camp and had their numbers tattooed on their arms

I was visiting my dad at his NH last fall before it got too cool we were in the courtyard when a fellow resident said hello and slowly wheeled by...a few minutes later I saw he had rolled down into a small dirt patch at the end of the garden. I ran over there all worried and concerned....when I got there, to my relief he had on a big smile and made a light comment about bad drivers. I pulled him out and got him to a safe spot....

After my surgery last spring, I spent 2 weeks in a home, for wound care and rehab.

It was mostly much older people, who could not get around well. I got around with a walker, first assisted, and then on my own. Yet the doors had alarms so I could not go outside.

I did not go to the lounge often because I did not think the chairs were comfortable. Later, I found a table with cards and played free cell. They came looking for me once since it was pill time!

I was so glad to get out of there. It was horrible. Noisy, hopeless people, and poor service. English was a second language of most staff. I kept asking them to repeat themselves.
