Seniors are the most precious people

Besides babies and toddlers lol. 馃挄
I went to my dad's nursing home today and because it was 70 degrees, a few residents were out in the garden area in their wheelchairs. It was just so touching seeing them enjoy the sun.

They often roll in their chairs up and down the halls and are so frail..and often look really sad. It is heartbreaking knowing they can't do anything but sit in their chair or go to the activity room for music. But just wondering about their past and what they were like years ago touches my heart 馃槩馃挀

i think we need to do better taking care of our seniors. (well in canada anyway) when my mom spent her last 2 months of her life in the hospital they kept making discharge plans with me. mom was living with me. they wanted to make plans to make my apartment "senior" friendly. she was facing leg amputations and her lungs were a mess. trust me it wasn't a good scene. they would send homecare to my place 3 times a day. she had it before and it was terrible. i told the hospital and her social worker she needs to be put in a home....minimum wait was 6 months...in hindsight i'm kind of glad she died in hospital as her life at home would have been a living hell....she would have wanted it that way....love you mom 鉂わ笍馃槩

@beermeplease government funded spaces are few and far between so ya long wait lists. Private homes are more interested in pleasing their shareholders (disgusting). It鈥檚 dire unless a family can afford $6-$10K per month. Most of the Fraser Health/Interior Health facilities are decent but lack staff and interesting things for seniors to do. It always broke my heart working in complex care facilities. 馃様

@Jeephikelove that something we definitely need to fix. we need to make that top priority for our seniors. tbh....i'm afraid of getting old...i have no one to take care of me.

@beermeplease they鈥檙e working on it, Covid was a huge eye opener and now people are paid to go to school to be a Healthcare Assistant. The problem is there are still people doing it who shouldn鈥檛. Ya if you don鈥檛 have kids or nephews and/or nieces who you can rely on it makes it very hard.

@Jeephikelove when my mom had homecare workers show up here, they did nothing really. one time 2 of them spent a ton of time in her bedroom while she sat on living room couch. she felt humiliated when they bathed her in shower while she sat in chair. just turned water on and said good enough...get out...they did nothing when they cleaned or cooked. all this while i was at work. she begged me to cancel the service...which i did. that was a really tough time for my brother and i.
