Need opinion...would you go on this medication?

So for many years I've had white coat syndrome, where because you fear your blood pressure might be high you get SO nervous, that it goes really high while being checked. I can only get an accurate reading when my doctor does not tell me or announce she's going to check it. Then I really don't realize what she's doing till the end, because we are chatting a lot. It's normal at rest, without anxiety.

So she knows that I get anxious on other occasions outside of the office, in traffic, etc my blood pressure does probably go up during those times, a few times a week. But, it goes back down to normal in a couple minutes. She wants to put me on a blood pressure medicine, to be preventative, so that down the line, my heart is protected and that the vessels aren't harmed over time. But my pressure is normal. It's only a few times a week it goes up for a miniscule time. I've read that anxiety does NOT HARM THE BODY. My therapist even thought it's a bit much to go on a med if it's not ACTUALLY regularly high.
I'm afraid of it now going low if I went on it. Would you go on it? It's a low dose, but still 🤔🙁

Thank you for posting this! Ive had very similar experience but end up not going to a doctor at all! Hah...the last time I went to a walk in clinic for a really bad sore throat was 2015.
Anywho, my dad has the white coat too and they put them on a BP medication and the trouble he had was once he was relaxed his BP would go too low! They didn't believe him and made him wear an at home 24/7 monitor until it proved what he was saying. So the amount of medication make a difference.
One question ive had, but not tried to find answers for yet is is there a BP medication that helps regulate BP without lowering it?
Once on a bp medication it dose tend to make people more tired, even have colder hands and feet.
Im sure there are foods that can naturally lower/regulate BP? What about grapefruit? Most of those taking bp meds are told to not touch grapefruit..mmm

@Alisha233 Was he on the lowest dose? He must've needed a lower dose, ugh. For me it's just those intermittent times it goes up she's concerned about, so it's really a preventative measure, but if I don't truly need it, I don't want to take it. I guess I can ask for lowest dose possible. She prescribed 5 mg but lowest is 2.5 I believe.
Do you have fear of doctors overall or just blood pressure check?
My opinion:

I wouldn't go on it until either I have done or someone else has done a BP study.

I'm actually dealing with the same EXACT scenario right now. IE: Normal at home....high reading at my appointments.
But my doctor is aware and currently monitoring the situation. He has warned that going on a BP med at this could cause my BP to bottom out and I could pass out from low BP.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Threepio Wow that's what I'm afraid of.. but she said it's a low dose, 5 mg Only and that even old frail people are on it and don't get dizzy or go low on it. But, they could ACTUALLY have high BP and that's why it's not give them effects.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Threepio And she said it relaxes the vessels so over time the intermittent high BP won't affect heart. But I've read panic and higher BP from panic does not harm the body. That it comes back down , so I'm torn
@Coralmist It probably depends upon the degree and duration of the panic.

And you would want to have more than a single source for something this important.

You could ask to wear a blood pressure monitor which I believe takes readings through out a 24 hour period to have a better idea if that's a good plan for you but it seems very odd to me that those meds would be needed if your blood pressure is normal most of the time. It's your body but I wouldn't take anything unless there was a really good reason for me doing so.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@PatientlyWaiting25 She's said higher blood pressure even occasionally can increase a heart event years later. But I've read panic and anxiety do not harm the body. So I'm pretty conflicted. Especially since yes, on the whole it's a normal pressure
PatientlyWaiting25 · 46-50, F
@Coralmist it just seems really unusual to me, would be more logical to be looking at the reasons why you are experiencing panic and anxiety and working through that in therapy surely.

Maybe time for a second opinion. It would be good to get the anxiety in check but a BP med is something tricky to come off once you start. I’d worry about it lowering too much.

I am on 2 blood pressure meds (lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide) due to consistently high readings in their office, and even at home with my own cuff it tended to be high.

But it has come down, so I take my pressure less frequently at home. It was actually normal in their office on my last visit.

I never felt any different. Even with the pill that is supposed to make me urinate more (I do not!).

The only meds that I noticed effects was Ozempic for diabetes and Linzess for constipation. Ozempic slows down my stomach. I have to be careful not to drink too much water or I will spit up. Which is annoying since I do not drink enough water!

Linzess dehydrates me and gives me muscle spasms and cramps (probably due to the dehydration). So I only take Linzess as needed, not every day as prescribed. I think it works. Yet my guts are fine right now and I have not taken a pill in a week.

Do you monitor it at home? I have WCS too, she gets me to monitor it at home, where the reading is more accurate! If possible, get a second opinion!

I drink chamomile tea and if I feel stressed such as being in heavy traffic when going for medical treatments in OKC etc, I take out my vial of lavender oil and start sniffing that. It is very relaxing. It will help lower my BP.
DunningKruger · 61-69, M
Have you bought a home blood pressure cuff? They're not too expensive — I just got a new one for about $30. That way, you can take your BP whenever you like to avoid the white-coat syndrome and show your doctor that you don't need BP medication. Or to show you that you actually do.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@DunningKruger Unfortunately any cuff , will cause my anxiety to shoot up. Even home ones. Just fearing it will be high, yet already knowing it's not high. How messed up is fear???? And my dang mind ugh.
It's only if we are blabbing on and she often will not tell me, and I actually really don't notice because we're talking so much. It's the only accurate time. I appreciate that though.
I just know it's not NEEDED is what's making me not take it, it's preventative.... If I knew for sure I'd have no effects like dizziness etc I'd do it I guess.
Since it's a low dosage I think it's worth a try. Your doctor won't prescribe something for you that she thinks will be harmful.
@Coralmist It's understandable to be a little anxious. How long did she say the new med will take effect?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@onrealityofdreams she didn't say.
@Coralmist I shouldn't think it would take long.
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I bought a blood pressure machine and check my own at home. Its much lower at home
Shallowaters · 36-40, M
Well we have home remedies which can cure your diseases.... You just need to follow
No doctor will give you meds to cure blood pressure or diabetes
They just give meds to prolong the problem otherwise their business will get a dip.
Magenta · F
No, I would not. There are other ways to bring it down that are tried and proven by myself and others.
Shallowaters · 36-40, M
Sorry to say but allopathy will never give you a cure for your problem
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Anxiety does no harm, but it does tax your nervous system.
I would not touch it
