I had to call 911 again yesterday

So I had to call 911 again yesterday because I had another Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) episode. SVT is a very fast or erratic heartbeat that affects the heart's upper chambers. My heart rate was over 200 beats per minute for over 30 minutes yesterday.

————————————————————————

The first episode happened April 23rd at 10:30pm. I called 911 and the EMT’s came and we managed to get it stopped by doing vasovagal maneuvers. The had me blow really hard into a syringe until my heart beat regulated. We got it stopped and they took me to the ER. The doctor on call never came into see me or order any tests, the just kept me on a heart monitor all night and sent me home.

————————————————————————

Yesterday they had me doing vasovagal maneuvers and were ready to push Adenosine to chemically get my heart back to beating normally but we managed to stop it with the vasovagal maneuvers. If Adenosine doesn’t work then they need to cardiovert which is shocking to regulate the heart.

————————————————————————

This time they did bloodwork, an EKG and the doctor gave me a medication to take when it happens. He said it's okay if your heart races for days and it won’t be damaged but don’t leave it that long. He said to take the medication called Metoprolol and if it doesn't get better in 45 minutes with the meds and the vasovagal breathing then to come in to the hospital for intervention.

————————————————————————

I need to see a cardiologist now and that was a scary feeling. Not to mention my kids were so upset to see me being taken away in the ambulance twice. I don’t need another health issue either.

If you read this far, thank you 🩷

I had another episode this morning that started at 5:39am. I took the metoprolol when it started with my heart rate at 209 and completing the vasovagal maneuvers I managed to get my heart rate back to normal after 40 minutes.

I am so tired now after all of that. It worries me this episode was so close to my last episode that was on Sunday evening at 5:21pm.

@Spnk8 They don’t know why yet. I have not changed any meds, or my diet. I don’t have anymore stress that usual. The doctor seemed to think it was a heart issue but I need to see a cardiologist. Hopefully I don’t die before that appointment lol.
Spnk8 · 36-40, M
@iamonfire696 oh wow yeah I hope not I don't want you to die. Please keep us updated hang in there I'm keeping you in my prayers 🙏💗
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Spnk8 I don’t wanna die either lol. I will make sure I get help for this though. I am
Persistent.

I had that. When I was younger I had condition that caused ventricular tachycardia. I was also capable of beating at over 200 beats per minute. 31 years ago I had a radio frequency ablation. I was born with a spare electrical circuit in my heart. They were able fix me with catheters that inserted through arteries in the groin area & then fed into my heart. They found my extra circuit & they fried it. My heart beats like a fine tuned watch ever since.
I hope you have a good doctor who can fix you too.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@iwishuwerehere I am sorry you went through this but I am happy they fixed it 🩷
Matt85 · 36-40, M
You are brave. That would scare the heck out of anyone. I hope you can get this fixed, I pray they will fix you.❤️🙏
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Matt85 thank you, I appreciate that.
Freetime · 56-60, M
Do you need to check your blood pressure before taking Metoprolol? That's what my father was told to do, but he was taking it for a different problem.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Freetime the doctor didn’t mention that but I would only be taking one pill when it happens and my blood pressure is normal.
Freetime · 56-60, M
@iamonfire696 My father's blood pressure was sometimes low and the concern was that the medication could make it even lower.

I do hope it helps you.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Freetime oh yah that would be concerning. I have a BP monitor so I can check it if I need too. Thanks 🩷
I'm so sorry to hear about your SVT episodes; sounds really scary. 26 years ago, a relative had some kind of vagal attack. I know the year because it was right around a wedding in the family. Anyway, they implanted a fancy pacemaker that only kicks into operation when it detects irregularity in heart beats. Fast forward 25 years; last year they replaced the pacemaker; the guy is still going strong!

I don't know how similar your condition is to my relative's but I hope it comforts you to know that there are good and long-lasting treatments for arrhythmia.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@ElwoodBlues Thank you for that. There was mention of a heart ablation for SVT but I need to see the cardiologist to see what in my heart is causing this. It’s so scary and I panic like crazy when it happens lol. I feel better knowing that when it races it’s not going to damage my heart.

If the doctor would have come in the first time to see me and explain that I wouldn’t have been a ball of nerves since the first one.
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
I never ever knew this condition existed, so very scary, glad you came through alright except for a major scare to you and your kids.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Longpatrol I knew it did because I had a few short episodes last fall but they thought it was medication related and the longest episode was 5 minutes.

You could see my heart beating in my chest. I talked to my kids when I got home and told them I would be okay.
I'm sorry you had to go through this again ):

I’ve had two runs of SVT. First time I converted using medication, second time it was by cardio version. Soon after I had an oblation that ended that issue. That was back in 2019 and I’m still SVT free. PM me if you have any questions or want to know more. 🤗
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SageWanderer I am so sorry you have gone through this. I am sure that will be my path too but I don’t know how long it will take to see the cardiologist though.

Was the surgery scary? I also don’t want to be cardioverted either. I may just PM you 🩷.
SageWanderer · 70-79, M
@iamonfire696 Anytime you need to but neither the cardio version or the oblation were scary.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@SageWanderer thank you
So sorry you’re experiencing this. Must be very scary. That vulnerable feeling when you’re not well is so difficult to handle. Hope the doctors can get things under control very soon.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@OlderSometimesWiser it was really unnerving but at least I have. Plan next time with the meds and hopefully I can manage this at home until I can see a cardiologist.
@iamonfire696 Yes, hopefully having a plan of action will help put your mind at ease.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@OlderSometimesWiser I felt relieved when he said leaving my heart racing for days wouldn’t damage it. Still such an awful feeling though.

Thank you. 🩷
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
Sorry to hear that you are having this cardiac issue. Hopefully the cardiologist can help you get things stable and under control. 🙏🙏🤗🤗
TrunkZ · 56-60, M
@iamonfire696 It truly does. They never tell you these things when you sign up for adulting 😔😔
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F

TrunkZ · 56-60, M
@iamonfire696 Hmmm... would our 18 year old versions that just started driving and discovered alcohol care and freedom?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
Is there anything that can trigger it? And it was not anxiety? I am so sorry you experienced this 😞💜 That is good news that it won't damage the heart. You are a w arrior. 🫂
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Coralmist I don’t think anxiety does. The first time I was getting ready for bed and wasn’t anxious and yesterday I was cooking dinner and it just happens.

Not gonna lie though once it starts going then I am anxious because it’s such a scary feeling but the doctor said anxiety doesn’t bring it on.

Thank you 🩷
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@iamonfire696 Aww no worries. I hope when you meet with a cardiologist they can shed more light on it, and maybe even a pacemaker might be optimal like a member said. I know they work very well. Ugh anxiety does elevate the heart rate ..mine can go really high. Hopefully that med can help you and just have the peace of mind you have it if needed. Lots of hugggsss my friend🌺🤗🌹
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Coralmist Thank you, having my heart rate over 200 was scary.

That’s scary, especially since you’re still young. My heart goes out for you and your kids. Hopefully you’ll recover and won’t have to deal with this condition again.

Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
That would have been so scary to go through. You’re so young. They failed you apr 23 when the doctor on call did not show up for you. I hope you don’t go through this ever again
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Jenny1234 This is just another issue to add to the pile of health issues.

He definitely did, he is training to be an anaesthetist and had surgery in the morning so he was too lazy to come in.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
You may need a cardiac ablation if it keeps happening. It is where they kill the cells that keep causing your SVT
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Silentpleasure that’s what one of the EMT’s mentioned to me and my doctor had said when I saw her on Friday.
Silentpleasure · 31-35, F
@iamonfire696 Great news is there is a high success rate and usually once it is done you won't have the issue anymore :D
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Silentpleasure Yes, who knows how long it will take to see one lol. I live in Canada.
Spnk8 · 36-40, M

iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@ineedadrink Yeah, this was no anxiety attack. First time I was just getting ready for bed and yesterday I was in the middle of cooking dinner.

@Barefooter25 Yes I will be but who knows how long it will take. I will call my doctor and see if she can put in an urgent referral now that it’s happened again.
I’m glad you have that medication but I also hope they can find the underlying cause and address that
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F

@Jeephikelove I have a heart murmur too but they don’t think it was causing the SVT episode
Jeephikelove · 46-50, F
@iamonfire696 hopefully they find some answers. My bet is it’s your medication
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Jeephikelove It’s not my meds, nothing has been changed for a long time. Actually a med that was stopped back in the fall may have been helping keep this issue under control because I was on a beta blocker to help with migraines then the episodes started when I got taken off.
