My wife had a health incident

Last monday my wife, who has minor cognitive issues, went out with friwends for lunch to a nice place in Melbourne. After the meal, she was unwell and that deteriorated quickly to the point where she was laid out in the ladies room confused and vomitting. An ambulance was called and she was taken to a major city hospital, where she was taken to Emergency, and attended to. I caught up with her there.. She was treated in the ER. She isnt the easiest pateint, and gets angry easily. But she was rehydrated with a IV, had anti nausea medication and a CT scan, after about 8 hours I convenced the staff this was "normal" for her and took her home. The total bill? $28 for the car park...😷

My wife had an ear issue while visiting Sydney a couple of days before we were due to fly back to the U.S. So we asked the hotel desk about getting it examined as the flight could further exacerbate whatever it was, and they said they would call the hotel doctor and have him come to our room. He did, syringed out the ear because it was just ear wax build up. Bill was around $20 Australian which at that time was about $10 US. I was embarrassed to put in a claim to insurer for emergency care while traveling. I'm sure it got passed around through many hands for a good laugh.

Good to hear your wife is okay. An ambulance ride ,treatment, a CT scan and 8 hrs in an ER would probably cost you $10-20,000 dollars in the USA.

@goodlil666 It was a shame, since this was her first big outing since Covid. I just have to watch her more closely in future. But right now she is happy with coffee in a cafe in the mall. So we did that today. I am really at a loss how America can spend double what we do on health care and wehave to deal with the logistics of patient services over long distances that America just doesnt have.. We carry extra insurance, but that was not touched in this case..😷

@whowasthatmaskedman because insurance companies and health care services are greedy and they go unregulated and unchecked.

Great to hear she is back on her feet and out and about already.

I hope she is making a good recovery. Medical treatment free at the point of contact can help prevent a drama turning into a fullblown crisis.

In the U S and A just the ambulance would have cost thousands of dollars.

I'm sorry she had a bad experience, but glad it didn't break the bank.

I hope your wife is doing well

@eli1601 She is doing fine now thank you. I was going to say "Back to normal" But she was always Scottish, so there is that..It knocked her confidence around a little. But that seems to be fading. I had to explain to her several times where the bruise in her arm came from where she tore the canula out. Thanks for asking BTW..😷

@swirlie It is sad but true and I agree with just about everything you said accept if he would have called 911, the ambulance ride, paramedics, battery of tests and med would have probably taken the medical bill to well over $100.000 but at least it would have been paid for your right as long as that facility would accept that insurance.

I live in USA, ended up in the emergency room, with an overnight stay from a severe respiratory infection, had good medical insurance and the hospital rejected my insurance because they didn't work with my carrier. And another time I was turned away from a hospital after being diagnosed with double pneumonia for the same reason. True stories.

Thanks for acknowledging my post! You're the first one to do so in a week and a half of it's posting. And now everyone at SW wonders why this website has finally embarked upon it's end of life journey? 🤷🏼‍♀️

I suspect the answer to my own question would be, that our website has turned itself into nothing more than a game of trivial pursuit, as evidenced by the high degree of social ineptitude that is routinely exhibited by most players here. 🙄
