Lump under armpit

My sister noticed a small lump under her armpit several months ago. She had her doc look at it, she felt it and said its a cyst. That was that. Now last night, it started becoming painful, and she felt it and she said it was larger. Its under her skin inside. Anyone ever have this? Shes nervous its cancer, but I read cancer lumps under the armpit are typically painless. She is calling a dermatologist in the morning to have it either looked at or biopsied. Any experience with this?
Yes... Its a hibiscus cyst. She needs to see her doctor and ask for a course of antibiotics to clear it up.

Unfortunately, it can be common for them to become larger and painful - but they are harmless and nothing for her to worry about.

If she is getting them under her armpits... please let her know to expect them on her lady parts, too.

@HootyTheNightOwl Ok thanks Hooty...its firm she said, not squishy. Hopefully its what you mentioned...ty again.
@Coralmist It sounds exactly like the ones that I get.

It's best that she resist the urge to pop it, though, just to keep infection out - even though they hurt like a bish.

When she was checked by her doctor, they should have told her to expect them randomly returning and to expect them in her lady parts, too.

It should clear up by itself eventually, but, given the fact that it's already painful for her, a course of antibiotics will help hurry the process along.

I was diagnosed in 2019 after seeing my doctor and a visit to the breast screening department at my local hospital.

@HootyTheNightOwl Its under her skin, in her armpit...

Cancer survivor and health care professional here. Return to the doc sooner than later and have it re-checked and possible referral out for more review. If its growing and becoming an issue better find out what it is. I had a lump on my neck. Appeared on palpation and observation as benign. MRI revealed nothing to worry about. Surgical excision found it to be squamous cell carcinoma ... 7 weeks of radiation / high dose platinum based chemo ie 7 weeks of hell and cured. So I may be a bit over reactionary however the ENT docs and oncologists were spot on with it.
And from the day I got the Dx to the f/u PET scan revealed cancer free I stayed away from my resources, google and played dumb and became 100 %.

@Panda5689 Wow to think they found it was cancer AFTER removing it...so glad you feel better and are cured of it. My sister has an ultrasound this week or x ray, so HOPEFULLY it will be benign🥺

@Coralmist Good to hear. Best to rule out the worst. It is scary af, however, got to be positive

The armpit area (axilla) is where a lot of lymph nodes are. Cysts are fairly common any where in the body. They are fluid filled sacks. A malignancy would begin to calcify and would feel hard like a rock and would be irregularly shaped. Cysts are round and squeezable. A needle aspiration (draining it) would give her relief, but if it needs to be removed likely the dermatologist is going to refer her to a surgeon or a plastic surgeon because of the area in which her cyst is located.
How is your sister doing with her lump these days??? 🤔
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@HootyTheNightOwl she has an ultrasound scheduled this week for it.. thank you friend 🐞

I’ve had a few lumps in my pits over the years. Most are just sore for a few days to a couple weeks and then go away. Some have gotten a little more boilish…not fun…but they still went away eventually. I suspect your sister will be just fine before much longer.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Zaphod42 Thanks friend. Because it was small and now is larger she will call the doc to check it out, but hopefully its what you had..ty🌺

I just googled it, and it seems that the main cause of something like this is tendonitis. I saw the same thing that you mentioned that cancer would typically not be painful,thank God. But its always best to get it checked

@chuck7882 Ty friend 🍀

I had a lump in my armpit from a skin irritation from a different deodorant. I switched back and it’s been fine.
Ask her if she changed any deodorant or any kind of body spray.
I hope it all turns out fine.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Cantsayno Thanks I'll ask her. ☀️

On the positive side, cancer is not typically "felt", but she should probably see her regular doctor, not a dermatologist as what you're describing is on the "inside". Good luck.
blindbob · 41-45
it's a sebaceous cyst or swollen lymph node probably. go to the doctor but they may just advise you to use a warm compress until it shrinks.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
I had mine drained yesterday. Not fun and I fear it will need to be removed. Problem is where it's located. It's in my groin. I'll wait until fall to get it out if I can.
MrAboo · 36-40, M
No, but I hope for a speedy recovery for your sister.
The armpit is a great place for cysts to form due to moisture and friction. If it has swollen up over night then it is filling with blood/pus and the doctor may lance it to drain it.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@canusernamebemyusername Its inside the armpit, not on the armpit. She thinks it might be lymph node that enlarged but unsure 😞
GerOttman · 61-69, M
It could be actual 'cat scratch fever', I know you won't believe its a thing but look it up on the internets.. does she have cat(s)? I mean who has one cat...?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@GerOttman no, no pets
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Tastyfrzz it's ok. First time anyone besides me has touched me down there in a long time. Might have to change my orientation on my profile. Even it it was with a needle!
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
No experience… is the lump firm or squishy?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@Coralmist boil?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@WaryWitchWandering I dont think so
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
You can’t feel cancer so it’s not that.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@MrBrownstone Unfortunately with breast cancer, its often felt in a lump form. But painless usually, so at least that is a positive 🐦🐞
Bang5luts · M
I know of someone who had it yes. She [the person who had it] was in quite a bit of discomfort and pain. I think she said it was related to her glands were swelling because of bacteria and her lymph nodes were swollen from fighting off an infection in her arms and legs after
