Did you serve?
@NoThanksLeon Lack of service. Cause it was not classified.
@Sojournersoul My military service is classified. I answered your original question. Deal with it.
@NoThanksLeon Okay. We will go with classified. I have TS clearance.

It’s a huge part of one’s life. Like when you’re married for a long time, it’s very hard to never mention that person. It’s part of who and why you are.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
It’s a brotherhood. You are a part of something much bigger than yourself, but more than that it’s a noble badge of honor when you have served your country knowing you may have to pay the ultimate sacrifice, and you remember those who have paid with life and limb.
@Carissimi Within a normal conversation, out of the blue they say ..."when I got out of the marines..." or military. It is usually marines.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
@NoThanksLeon So, I don’t see the problem. What’s wrong with saying that? Get over it. It’s nothing.
@Carissimi I didn't say anything about a "problem". I merely asked why do they do it?
I don't see an issue with it. They gave up a lot to serve their country. Now...I'm sure there is stolen valor as some are faking it. I suspect that's a small percentage.
Most vets I know aren’t like that. It’s the political ones that go around waving that flag…
Adrift · 61-69, F
@Notmesam My brother in law is like that and its funny because he served during one of the easiest times when there was no war. But he walks around in army gear like he was a combat vet.
We all know he is afraid of guns.
I know you are required to qualify with a rifle so I wonder how the hell he even got through basic.
Always telling you about the war they fought in. Nothing wrong with that. ✌️ 🇺🇸 My father was a vet. It's an honor to serve.
Cassieeeee · 31-35, F
Why not? People talk about the things they're proud of doing in life, or big things in their life, so I would think that the people that have been in the military fit in one or both of the categories.
@Cassieeeee They rake gravel, pull weeds, and say "YES SIR"!
AthrillatheHunt · 51-55, M
They’re like vegans . It’s the first words out of their mouths. Lol

They want to be thanked for their service
Adrift · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 Thats not what I asked. The Military probably would not want you any way.
@Adrift No skin off my back
jackieash · 26-30
@MorbidCynic Do they? Hmm. I'm reminded of something my gran used to say: "If you go fishing for compliments, you'd better be prepared to catch wellies"
Paladin · 56-60, M
I don't think I've made mention of my time in the Army.
Never mind
eMortal · M
I’m ok with that. It comes from trauma.

It’s Nurses that annoy the fvck out of me for walking straight from hospitals to grocery stores with their contaminated uniforms.
I don’t care if it looks clean. To me you’ve been around infected people all day. Who knows what happened!?
Adrift · 61-69, F
@eMortal Your more likely to get a disease from your own keyboard or cell phone than you are from standing next to someone wearing thier uniforms. They are fully aware and trained on infection control.
jackieash · 26-30
@Adrift When I've been visiting someone in hospital,I've seen nurses, going off duty, walking into a staff room, and re-appear in their "civvies" to go home in.

The Military People that I know do not want to be “thanked for their service.”

Yeah, yeah, they did it for “us,” but many of them were more doing it for themselves— to get to a better place, to serve their country, or for their own sense of self worth.

Which are all fine with me, too

Because they hunger for the "thank you for your service" comments. Makes them feel special.
smiler2012 · 56-60
@NoThanksLeon 🤷‍♂️maybe it does not matter but they must be proud of there feat
calicuz · 51-55, M
I'm going to start asking for ID.
@calicuz Most still wear their dog tags. 😂 Like Rambo.
curiouslady93 · 31-35, F
Hey there, would you like to DM?
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Hats and shirts are mostly free for the asking,
calicuz · 51-55, M
"Here's a little trick I learned in Nam."
Actually a lot probably don't, but you just don't know it as they didn't say it.

But also it's a huge impact on a person's life.
Unhinged · 100+
My hot take is that veterans don’t deserve any special treatments they chose their job. I chose mine. I just chose not to get shot at in a war run by businessmen.
Really · 80-89, M
@Unhinged You haven't been around long have you? How many millions of conscripted or otherwise forced combatants do you think have been killed & maimed with no choice in the matter?
@NativePortlander1970 They probably watched Apocalypse Now and had all kinds of adventures.
I guy I worked with did that. Vietnam Vet. After the movie came out (which I did not see initially) he started telling stories about the jungle and such. 10 years later I happened to watch Apocalypse Now. It was like he wrote the script. 😂
@NoThanksLeon My dead maternal uncle did three tours in the jungle as a junior infantry officer, one thing he always said was that no one talks about being in combat or being in the shit, that those who do are most likely wanna bes that were most likely stationed stateside or in Europe, that the only combat they saw was dealing with crab grass.
