Ever eat expired food? I'm making expired potato soup mix

It expired on the 5th and today is the 8th so it's no big deal. It's a dry mix anyway

Often. Yogurts and other dairy products are usually okay for much long than their best-before date.
Not to mention "eat right after you open it. " Or "eat within a week after opening" Yeah...sure...😆

* (And I remembered wrong, it's actually marketed as yogurt 🤔)
CrazyMusicLover · 31-35
@Elessar That doesn't look bad. I also don't like acidic yogurts but it makes me feel like I eat something healthier. 😆 I eat plain ones with homemade jams.
Otherwise I prefer those a bit sweeter mixed curd or rice desserts. There used to be rice dessert with sour jam (rote grütze) that was amazing. But I don't remember which brand it was.

@CrazyMusicLover There is a farm ~30mins from my place where I bought some they made themselves from scratch, minus for the syrup/flavor I suppose. They also had blank ones. Those were good, but buffalo milk instead of cow; the difference in taste isn't extreme (idk if you ever tried goat milk, I made hot chocolate with it once and it ended down the sink 😬), but still noticeable a bit.

But even having tried the artisanal ones, yogurt isn't something I notice too much the quality of. Cheese, bread, meat, fish definitely, I can spot the local stuff from the market ones even blindfolded, but yogurt is probably something I have so seldom that I don't know that well 👀

Ohh so rice/yogurt desserts are a thing, it's not just that Muller one. 😅 I never tried them

Yes. Got a bag of carrots in the ice box that are marked "best by" November 2022. But since they are carrots and not dairy, I'm eating them anyway.

@REMsleep I used finely diced tomatoes instead of pimentos in my potato salad, gives it color but not the burpy flavor of pimentos.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@cherokeepatti OK wow, never thought of that.
I don't care that much for pimentos either but I don't hate them. I only include them if I'm serving it to my mom or other elders like for barbeques or holidays cuz they like traditional Southern Mustard Potato Salad with pimentos.

@REMsleep I just chop
Up a small Roma tomato after removing the seeds

Definitely. You can eat canned goods such as canned veggies as long as the can is not dented and is not leaking or rusty for up to 2 years after expiration. Dry mix soup? That is still good 18 to 24 months past expiration date.

Here's a whole article about it.

And eggs can still be used for making pancakes and in mixes even past the 4 week mark.

@4meAndyou ill have to check that out
4meAndyou · F
@SW-User Yup...just remember, if it's been processed, the expiration dates are just suggestions.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@4meAndyou Eggs can put in water to check for freshness, if they float they are too old. I have kept them for as long as 6 weeks with no problems at all. Someone here argued with me that a case of 60 would spoil before they could get eaten. We have used 16 eggs since Friday. They are not going to spoil. If it was just me and I ate 2 eggs a day for a month they would all get eaten for the end of the month.
SarithBorn · 18-21, M
yes most the time its bread 🤣
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Most of it is usually good for a few weeks or a couple months past the date. Some even for a year. It doesn’t actually “expire”, it’s just a bit better before that if it’s not something that can turn rancid.
SW-User
I think they’re good for a month after the expiration date
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User depends on what it is. Coconut oil stays fresher for a couple years longer than the exp. Date if it is not stored in hot conditions.
SW-User
@cherokeepatti hot conditions actually spoil foods before exp date

{@moonchildxx] yes all the time silly rule it is only a guidance if the tin or packaging is undamaged it maybe perfectly edible . only thing i might be wary of is meat and dairy products if they smell or taste dodgy it is a no no
JimboSaturn · 56-60, M
I wouldn't even worry about dry mixes.
Atlotto · M
The potato soup mix is prolly good for the next 10+ years.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
All the time. Expiration dates are really just to cover the manufacturers ass. Now if its dairy or meat you might want to take the dates to heart but dry goods, canned food, frozen things, veggies are good for way past the expiration dates.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@REMsleep tomato sauce and tomato paste will eventually start to darken and not taste good. But other things usually last pretty good. Especially if canned in glass jars. Someone here said they ate something that their grandmother left to them she had canned and it was about 20 years old.
I have, and lived to tell about it. It tends to be a guideline, anyway. And a difference of a few days certainly won’t kill you.
