I think that thought crosses everyone's mind at one time or another but I think as long as we try we make a difference in people's lives even if it isn't right then or visible to us. We do the best we can and that is all we can do.

@katrandu BEST answer. And this is what I believe.
[@nedkelley] While we are alive we have a miraculous force of energy most people call a spirit. So even if you don’t believe in God, this cannot be negated. Just touch a dead body. I happen to believe in God, and our spirit call it Karma or energy. When you study science you become aware of invisible protons and electrons and how they move and connect and transform. Neurology is even more invisible. Yes, you do make a difference. Like each H2O that connects and becomes a powerful force…we all matter. And we all play different roles. I realize I’m not using exact terms… I haven’t looked at science in a long time so I will delete this later

It's true that some people will refuse help. It is ALSO true that I DO wonder if the helping routine is worth it. We have a dear friend- an elderly lady- couldn't plan her way out of a bag! You get parts to fix something of hers, she changes her mind. and so it goes.

in some cases no , people won't trust you to even help them due to paranoia sweeping the world

Well...at times when I give in to a bit of despair, I suppose I think in that way. I have one friend who doesn't like to be helped if I spend money helping him. And yet there are times when he really needs the help. Fortunately he will allow me to drive him to the hospital and so on.

Some people just create their own problems and try to drag you into them.
Pointing someone in a different direction and giving them the encouragement to move forward is one thing, but they have to do the work themselves.

I have been helping a couple of older people get their homes repaired after the floods. They have been well deserving of my help and very thankful.
