What do you think about people who do extreme piercings, tattoos, or body modifications?

Do you think it is just a form of expressing yourself or is there a deeper psychological meaning?

It's the lazy way of being unique. You're essentially buying an identity at that point. You skip over the need to develop any differentiating character traits by advertising pseudo-symbolic ornaments on your flesh

I like this answer and I couldn't have said it better myself. 👍

Doesn't affect me at all, so I don't care what they do with their bodies.
NineLives · 41-45, F
Well, I was more asking from a conversation starting standpoint.
I don't think 99% of the people care what other people are doing to their bodies.
its always been kind of attention seeking to me..

fire at will haters :)

What people do with their bodies is their business. But. I'm not into it; it's mutilation. Same goes with makeup, hair dye, etc. No thanks.

Again, I am not asking if you give them permission. I'm asking why you think they do it?
@NineLives: Because they want to be an accessory and don't mind exposing themselves to infection. They do it to appear a certain way, buying into a fad, becoming something other than themselves, so they can talk about their tattoos or piercings instead of their vapid personalities. It's a very straightforward way to buy culture rather than create it.

I know mine have meaning like the Japanese demons I have on my shoulders is to represent that I have put my demons behind me

What kind of deep psychological meaning are you referring to?
NineLives · 41-45, F
I don't know, that is why I am asking. I could come up with a theory, but it doesn't make me right!
My personal opinion: If I see someone doing something so drastic to their outer body, it makes me think that they are very insecure on the inside. They don't think their inside is unique enough to stand out from the crowd.

@NineLives: Okay, I see. I think it depends on the tattoo, but to me it's when people want to be differentiated from the norm, tattoos can be powerful.

It's their choice, so it matters little whether I approve or not
NineLives · 41-45, F
I understand that people don't need approval to become pierced or tattooed. I was just wondering why do you think they do it?
SW-User
expression for sure since piercings and tattoos are considered art
SW-User
Probably both. They have a right to do what they want, but I'm not a fan...
