What other ways, besides amending gun laws, could we stop or lessen gun violence?

JoeyFoxx · 51-55, M
Perhaps the best way is for us to stop relying so heavily on social media to communicate and work harder to get to know our neighbors.

While there have been a handful of these incidents carried out by folks who are truly deranged, most of them are based on some kind of misplaced hatred based on ignorance.

Most of this ignorance is based on folks not knowing how to learn about neighbors.

It's not something that happens overnight. We've been unlearning common courtesy for decades. It started in the aftermath of World War II when we all wanted the world to be perfect.

Life isn't perfect. It will never be. But, it can be perfectly imperfect. We need to learn how to rely on each other and learn how to befriend each other. We need to learn how to discern the difference between a stranger who is a bad person and a stranger who just hasn't become a friend yet.

If I may take it one step further and propose we also stop relying on government to fix everything. That we as a community step up and enact the changes so many people have proposed on this very thread. More laws more programs won’t fix the heart. @JoeyFoxx

Maybe I said exactly the same thing lol :-)

Perhaps promoting "traditional family values" like responsibility, integrity, and showing kids that we care.

Stop coddling people who commit crimes and have sentences which actively reflect their crime. If you kill people - you die, you don't get on the cover of Rolling Stone.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@xixgun Vengeance is a shitty fucking directive, as the science shows that revenge makes victims of wrongdoing less happy rather than more. Second of all, a study from The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences suggests that as many as 4.1% of all people sentenced to death may be innocent, implying the unrightful end to hundreds of innocent lives. And that's WITH our robust and expensive justice system and very localized death penalty. If you had extrajudicial killings like that, the wrongful conviction rate would inevitably spike.

If your goal is vengeance -- which is asinine, but whatever -- then there should also be vengeance for all the innocent people your Gestapo ends up killing. Execution to the executioners, and so on and so forth forever. That would still be total shit, but at least it would be consistent.
xixgun · M
@BlueVeins My goal is irrelevant, as I'm simply telling you the thought process behind it.
And let someone you love be raped and murdered, and then tell me how shitty you feel vengeance is.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@xixgun Well, your thought process is stupid and I'm simply explaining that. According to a study by the University of Minnesota, as little as 2.5% of victims' families actually felt closure when the perpetrators were executed. That's it. The idea of murdering 200 people in the interest of consoling 5 isn't just evil. It's idiotic and inefficient.

Better mental healthcare, follow-ups, documentation. Something short of an ID bracelet that says mental health issues...idk. something, anything is got to make a difference in this American epidemic.
@Montanaman There is still so much of a social stigma around mental illness. If somehow that could be lessened, people would seek help, and not try to hide it.

@bijouxbroussard very true.👍👍😔🤗🤗

1. gun restrictions on people with history of gun violence.
2. mental clearance by a psychologist/psychiatrist every 5 years to own/keep a gun.
3. addressing the bullying problems at school more effectively
4. strengthening community mental health outreach to people at risk of becoming violent, help them solve such problems as unemployment, addictions, poor education by providing job training, education, housing..
5. effectively addressing social justice problems,
6. effectively addressing the diminishing middle class problem.
7. making effective programs to strengthen the family unit since a healthy family is more likely to raise mentally healthy people and good citizens...
8. incentivizinf programs that strengthen the communities such as vulunteering programs so people get out more and meet their neighbors connect more with each other..

I think making mental health specialists more accessible would help greatly. Also, as a society, lessening the stigma around mental illnesses and making those people (which includes most of us in some way or another, diagnosed or not) feel more secure and safe talking about it.

Stop feeding drugs to children as soon as they start going to school.. children today are over medicated...
In my opinion there is a correlation between the two..

Create more versatile educational systems that incorporates the higher energy of most males and some females and a faculty which understands these differences @SW-User

@SW-User This has been proven, the common denominator has been drugs, all the way back to Columbine.

the patriarchy has been demonized in recent years, but maybe among its faults, it served some purposes as well.

Fight the Godforsaken poverty. The best case would be instating a UBI (after more research is conducted), but pumping federal money into public schools and raising the minimum wage would help.

The core problem is the family. Families have children and abuse them and warp them with neglect and cruelty. Mental health problems in children are not caught early because the families don't even notice.

Parenting classes before having children would help a lot...with the emphasis on consequences...what will happen if parenting is a nightmare of anger and stress and neglect? Potential parents who are prone to rage, stress, or immature behavior should be counseled to wait before inflicting themselves on a child, (more politely than I have stated it here).

Public school should not be an option for kids who exhibit early signs of violence or abberrance, because public schools are a vicious arena of torture and torment for kids who are different. There is free online schooling available now almost everywhere.

Nothing. Americans have to finally realize they are NOT safer with guns...they are safer WITHOUT them. Anything else is window dressing and will accomplish NOTHING.
anathemaJack · 46-50, M
Gun registry. Confiscate the guns after. Easy.

Pay attention to what people say and do and get help if there is any suggestion the person might just be the next serial killer or mass murderer!
