My mum was brought up a catholic but says "Praise fuckin Allah" to swear. That means a good mood. "Jesus Fuckin Christ" = bad mood. Think she's agnostic these days.

@LireaSemaji Catholic (was). The Allah bit is a)a piss-take b)reflects a bit on our multiracial community here. She wouldn't say the Allah bit in front of next door (Bengalis). But if you want the finest biblical related swearing see a catholic family.

@Southseachick Oh ok. UK??

Technically saying “oh my God” is a sin so it’s not like believers should be saying it.
These phrases have been ingrained into Western culture; it’s not as if you must be a Christian to utter them.

Sounds awfully Jehovah’s Witness of you... @MartinTheFirst

@MartinTheFirst oooh I get what you’re saying!! 😆

@SW-User I'm a big reader. I love reading. Last year I realized I hadn't read the Bible so I read it. One of the things I realized after reflecting back on the book in its entirety was how holy those names are. I wouldn't use the name of any supreme being from any religion in a way that doesn't show utmost respect.

A lot of words are rooted in religion, for instance goodbye/good-b'wy was originally short for "god be with you".
Most languages are rooted in religion so you end up saying things without thinking of them.

The days of the week are rooted in pagan religion, e.g. “Wednesday” = “Woden/Wotan’s day”, the name of a Germanic god (Odin). Most of us don’t think of these meanings when we use these words. @Ryannnnnn
That's me. It's out of habit. I doubt anyone actually thinks about anything religious when using those terms.
I would not say anything with jesus, i dont know a good replacement for hallelujah but i do use oh my gosh instead of oh my god. i would not blame someone if they said oh my god because sometimes its hard to think of a better alternative, and i still say the pledge of allegiance as it was originally written.

They’re common phrases. It’s more of language thing than it has to do with religion.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
They're just figures of speech, not meant to be taken literally.

Mostly it's people who used to believe in religion. I was a Christian and I was made to read Bible and recite prayers by heart which I know till date. My boyfriend is Christian and I still go to church and recite prayers with him, so that he doesn't feel alone. It's out of habit that sometimes I say, 'Jesus' or 'Oh my God'. It's more like a phrase to me.
JBird · F
@MartinTheFirst lol. You're offended at that? 😅 that's very silly. Well, yes, it's true. I know atheists who used to be Christians (Look at the comments too). They use the similar phrase out of habit. That's why I said 'mostly'. I am very sorry if that offended you. I will try not to use any religious phrase and I will tell my non religious friends not to use it too in case it offend your fragile religious ego. 😂
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@JBird your attempts to argue is pathetic mate. Im still not offended.
JBird · F
@MartinTheFirst oh, yeah. You're not offended at all. I knew that from your very first comment. And I have very strong reaction to bullshit too, hence my argument.

I had an elderly woman walk up to me once when I was waiting for my mother to finish checking out at Walgreens. She said, "Can I tell you something?" Without waiting for my reply, she launched into a long, religious harangue, with the phrase, "a thousand years of peace" sprinkled into it. I have no idea who she was, what she wanted, or get her to stop. She finally turned and walked away just before my mom came out of the store.

Many people don't believe in GOD but beleive that there is a spiritual world filled with beings.
They beleive them to be angels.

On here. And some who quote phrases from the bible, lol. For instance.."the truth shall set you free". It's ironically funny.
Magenta · F
P.S. One thing that makes it so funny, is they use or apply it in a different way than it's meant.

Yeah ,I say some of those things out of habit ,to me they are just sayings
Groofydorkgerdo · 56-60, M
I have and and still am. For most, its just expressions.
Sara05f · 18-21, F
do you beleive?
LireaSemaji · 26-30, F
@Sara05f Yes

I know, we're all guilty. Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain.
4meAndyou · F
No. I do know one person who still believes in God but is massively disillusioned with all religions. I normally don't hang out with people who don't believe in God, because I find them so extremely negative.

Oh my god is just out of habit
MaryJanine · 70-79, F
@SW-User I believe and I use it all the time when I am surprised or upset or happy. It has nothing to do with your religion.

SW-User
I use all of those and i don't believe in God.
eMortal · M
Geez! What?
Dshhh · M
the English phrase,, Good Bye is a contraction of God Be With YOU
in Spanish? adios, is ( go) "with god"
Britain? Bloody comes from By Our Lady
religion is embedded in our culture and language
a near inescapable Virus
