Can someone help me solve this equation 2y^2=10y+7

And show how you got, it cuz I need help all it say is solve
drymer · 56-60, M Best Comment
OK, if you're going to use the quadratic formula then...

2y^2 -10y -7 = 0

so

a = 2
b = -10
c = -7

replace the a,b and c values in the quadratic formule and you'll get the value of Y

Makes sense?

@ImRileyTheDog To get the a, b and c values for the quadratic formula...
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
@drymer But it already as an equal sign in the equation, you just get rid of it and throw it at the end then equal 0? I don't recall doing that for some reason.

@drymer

(in this case y instead of x of course)

2y^2 = 10y + 7

This is a quadratic equation so you want to start by getting all the terms to one side so you have zero on the other...

subtract 10y + 7 from both sides

2y^2 - 10y - 7 = 0

You can't factor this conveniently so you can either stick it into the quadratic formula or solve by completing the square...

[big]Completing the Square![/big]

First you want the coefficient of y^2 to be one...

Divide both sides by 2

y^2 - 5y - 7/2 = 0

Now you want take half of the coefficient of y then square it and add and subtract it from the left side...

Add and subtract (b/2)^2 = (5/2)^2 =25/4 from the left hand side

y^2 - 5y + (5/2)^2 - (5/2)^2 - 7/2 = 0
y^2 - 5y + (5/2)^2 - 25/4 - 7/2 = 0
y^2 - 5y + (5/2)^2 - 39/4 = 0

Now you can factor the first three term!!!!

(y - 5/2)^2 - 39/4 = 0

Now you want the squared thing to be on one side and everything else to the other...

Add 39/4 to both sides

(y - 5/2)^2 = 39/4

Now you want to get rid of the square!

take the square root of both sides

y - 5/2 = ±sqrt(39)/2

Now finally isolate y

Add 5/2 to both sides

y = 5/2 ± sqrt(39)/2

DONE!!!

@ImRileyTheDog subtract 10y + 7 from both sides
Madame · F
@ImRileyTheDog You're trying to isolate the 'y' variable from the other stuff. In doing so, it's going to shift the non 'y' stuff to one side.

@SW-User OK YESS! I RECALL NOW! Geez I am still in high school and I couldn't recall that for some reason. Thank you! I thought I was going insane.

@ImRileyTheDog Ah youth... I wanted to go into the military (Air Force), but didn't (long story), it's one of my life regrets, although I may have ended up hating it, who knows...
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
@SW-User @drymer I know people who do not want me to join but I want to and my parents support me. I will go to school after the Army because they will also pay for it. I have just always had an interest in the army and honestly cannot wait to enlist this summer.
drymer · 56-60, M
@ImRileyTheDog I totally understand, people either like the military or hate it, I understand both perspectives and I don't judge, but like you I always felt a rather strong affinity for military stuff... I'm a huge history buff and I'm fascinated by war history... I'm glad that nowadays the US military is volunteer, so no one is asked to do such a demanding job without really wanting to, I think it makes it way more efficient...
reflectingmonkey · 51-55, M
what's that thing between the y and the 2?
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@flashywords No it is 2 * (y^2). You do not square the 2 out front.
SW-User
@reflectingmonkey 2y squared
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
@SW-User If you want to square 2y, it should be written as (2y)^2.

Typically exponentiation is evaluated first, so for 2 * y^2, the y would be squared, then the result multiplied by 2. This is how Excel handles it, for example. Yet when in doubt, include more parentheses.

Am I solving for Y?
xSharp · 31-35, M
@ImRileyTheDog why? lol your struggling with applied as it is
ImRileyTheDog · 22-25, F
@xSharp Because I want 4 years of math and I am honestly decent at math🙄
xSharp · 31-35, M
@ImRileyTheDog im taking gr 12 applied without gr 9 10 or 11 applied and im so far at 38% before the exam which is 30% of our total grade, i dont know if thats good or bad but i took it just to see if i could do it lol
SW-User
(2y-5)(2y+2) I don't know lol it's been so long
xSharp · 31-35, M
@SW-User and now foil it? lol

(2y)(2y)=4+2y+2y+y^2

Y^2+4y+4=10y+7

Subtract 7 from both sides and get y^2+4y-3=10y

Subtract 10y and get y^2-6y-3

I could be wrong tho
If you go to https://www.tiger-algebra.com/drill/-2y~2_10y-7=0/

It offers two solutions and shows the steps.

Glad math solving days are behind me... Sorry, did you need an answer? 😄
SW-User
But wait why I had a dream about this equation last night...🤔
SW-User
Put all the y's on one side. 2y^2-10y=7
The answer is orange.
