Should men continue to be taught to be tough?

Coralmist · 41-45, F
I think you mean 'tough' as in 'macho' and intimidating and closed off in a way. IN that sense as it has been for generations, NO. Nope, and negative. In a sense of mental toughness, yes, or more, strength, yes. A feeling of inner strength to HELP people or connect with them, not feel separated or that THEY need to feel intimidated (or intimidate others. ) I love and admire men who have a gentleness to them, a serene aura that they are in touch with all aspects of themselves, not just some physical toughness. Good question D
Everyone needs to be tough at times.

Men should be courageous ...

@Zaphod42 yes
A woman should be weak ...
if her man can protect her from all the difficulties of life ...
this is what you say 😉
Darina · F
@Coralmist I'm not weak ... I can be tough ...
but I like being weak with my man ...
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Zaphod42 Awww .. :)
Tough, how? I teach all my kids to be tough, as in resilient and strong. I try to teach them how to endure hardships so they don't get broken so easily. In that respect, I hope men (and women) continue to be taught to be tough.

Appropriately, yes. Men should be strong and tough, but intelligent and considerate as well. We should be taught not to be stuck in our ways but to be adaptive to a rapidly changing world.

I teach my sons to become knights. Courageous, protective, courteous, gentle, polite, and yes... strong.
dark548 · M
@NewBecky hopefully they are not too nice for their own good, where they get walked over.
NewBecky · 51-55, F
@dark548 Right... I should include wisdom on the list... difficult to teach wisdom.

Tough enough to be able to handle life
Tatsumi · 31-35, M
If they're going to have to die bloody at some point to protect women and children, then yeah. Teaching boys not to cry and not to seek help is teaching them how to be self-sufficient and reinforcing the idea that they're not as important, in preparation for that day when they'll have to put their wife, gf, children or whatever before their own life.

If we want males to be that human shield, then that's a pretty important part.
dark548 · M
@Tatsumi I see 🤔 one must be ready for battle. Training is good, exercise, gym etc.
SW-User
Of course. Unless we want a bunch of pansy asses walking around.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SW-User So unless they act tough, they are a pansy?? I find 'tough' guys actually immature sometimes, and they often don't think before acting , and try to intimidate other men or women. No thanks.. give me the sensitive, thinking, KIND guy any day.
SW-User
@Coralmist I didn't say act tough.🙄 They should be tough. Geez.
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
Everyone should. But in the end we are who we are.
goagainsttheflow · 26-30, F
I think so because they are adults. It's okay for adults to cry and complain but they must also know that it won't change anything. They must put thought into action if they want something to happen.
Spokeskitties75 · 46-50, M
Unfortunately the “tough” men are slowly disappearing... they were the greatest generation
dark548 · M
@Spokeskitties75 What do we have now?
goagainsttheflow · 26-30, F
@Spokeskitties75 I think they are disappearing because masculine personalities are being looked down upon now. People are confusing tough men with jerks. They think a tough man disrespects people and picks fights every chance he gets when that is not true. A tough man can be strong, masculine, outgoing, and manly without being nasty and violent to people.

I am sad that many masculine men are changing their personality just because people feel that intimidated by them. I hope this trend of stomping them out dies soon. I happen to like tough, masculine men.
