Last year I married a 'ready made family' but I feel a mistake may have been made. My two step sons will not work nor want, they refuse to get jobs

and rely on their mother (my wife) for everything. Recently my wife had to give up 2 of her jobs as she was giving birth to the twins but she has managed to work the other two jobs from home. Because of this I feel the older sons could be doing more, as a budding author I cannot work so we rely on my wife for finances. I generally was fine with this until Christmas day when I found that it was only my wife (with my direction) that was buying any presents...I was flabbergasted, they sponge free bed and board and accept presents but do not buy any for us, the people that are feeding them. I secured jobs for both of them at the local building site but my wife refused to let them go, she said that 'they are only 11 and 12 years old, the cannot do this type of work'! How on Earth can we possibly progress as a family when my wife will not support my gargantuan efforts to get these freeloaders into gainful employment?

I despair and do not know what to do, I cannot leave as this would mean I would have to get a job myself...I can feel your warmth and your sympathy but advice needed.

I thank you in advance.

I'm experiencing the same with my 5 year old. Gone are the days where they had jobs in the mines. Kids these days are soft as can be

@deadgerbil Well done you, generally I do not work as I feel this is underneath a man of my standing and I yearn for the day when Donald Trump becomes the President of the World to return us to the days when people like me can thrive.

@AndysAttic it appears as though I'm talking to an urchin who wouldn't know a callous for he has never had one

@deadgerbil I had one on my foot once, that may have been a blister as I was treading apples to make cider.

Certainly your wife can't object to them working with plants, can she.

I hear the field of palm tree trimming is very lucrative. Plus, some have even gotten the opportunity to travel and fly for free.

@TrunkZ It would be like they are not even at work. :D

No matter how lazy the step sons are, do not give up your place to stay.
Working a job is the worst situation there is.

I do trust your wife has your meals ready on time each day? She needs to learn her place as well.

Obviously she isn't real supportive of your ideas BUT, you might have to overlook that.

I guess my advice ultimately is start calling her your "fiance" so that you are less likely to be kicked out before a better situation comes along. Like a woman who insists that her kids DO get god damn jobs.

I think the solution to your dilemma is right in front of your nose, Professor. Have them start a social website for creeps and pervs.
Im sure there is an Iphone factory or a Nike factory that could use some extra help. if they both quit school and work 60 hrs a week, you should be able to sit home and write books without the worry of doing any actual manual labor yourself.

@SheCallsMeCrushDaddy Indeed Sir, that is the plan....

I see people on SW cut you off at the knees but honestly you're view is very off the boys are too young to work and you should set an example for them by working yourself. I'm sorry for the hurtful comments below but you are far off base on this
