Last year I married a 'ready made family' but I feel a mistake may have been made. My two step sons will not work nor want, they refuse to get jobs

and rely on their mother (my wife) for everything. Recently my wife had to give up 2 of her jobs as she was giving birth to the twins but she has managed to work the other two jobs from home. Because of this I feel the older sons could be doing more, as a budding author I cannot work so we rely on my wife for finances. I generally was fine with this until Christmas day when I found that it was only my wife (with my direction) that was buying any presents...I was flabbergasted, they sponge free bed and board and accept presents but do not buy any for us, the people that are feeding them. I secured jobs for both of them at the local building site but my wife refused to let them go, she said that 'they are only 11 and 12 years old, the cannot do this type of work'! How on Earth can we possibly progress as a family when my wife will not support my gargantuan efforts to get these freeloaders into gainful employment?

I despair and do not know what to do, I cannot leave as this would mean I would have to get a job myself...I can feel your warmth and your sympathy but advice needed.

I thank you in advance.

I'm experiencing the same with my 5 year old. Gone are the days where they had jobs in the mines. Kids these days are soft as can be

@deadgerbil For shame Sir, it seemed only yesterday that there were opportunities in the field of chimney sweeping and pickpocketing for these urchins, but these halcyon days are gone...For shame.

@AndysAttic I earned my keep in the textile mill at a young age. Sure I lost two fingers from the machinery but it built character, something this generation knows nothing about

@deadgerbil Well done you, generally I do not work as I feel this is underneath a man of my standing and I yearn for the day when Donald Trump becomes the President of the World to return us to the days when people like me can thrive.

@AndysAttic it appears as though I'm talking to an urchin who wouldn't know a callous for he has never had one

@deadgerbil I had one on my foot once, that may have been a blister as I was treading apples to make cider.
