They retire from playing professional sports, but they rarely retire completely from work.

Usually they get a coaching or pundit job, or some sort of cushy sales job where they use their fame to land clients and close deals.

Most become too old to compete anymore, apart from the few exceptions who take very good care of themselves. They are constantly being replaced by 17 to 18yr old starlets who have all the talent and twice the energy and reflexes. So the demand for older athletes just tanks. Nobody wants them unless they can still perform at the top level.
