What is it with the USA and it's obcession with calling tiny potatoes 'tator tots'?

It isn't a term for small potatoes. It is for ground up potato waste molded into little nuggets. The original brand name for this junk food was Tater Tots, but it got extended to become the generic term for such products just as Kleenix did for tissues.
