A friend told me about her friend’s 13 year old committing suicide. 13!

How does one come to terms with that as a parent?
Top | New | Old
I’m so sorry…
A cousin with whom I had been close took her life when we were both 12.

She was being assaulted by a family "friend" and became pregnant.

When she told me, I advised her to tell her parents.

She did—and they didn’t believe her. I told my mother, who went to them, saying "children don’t lie about this !”

The parents told us both to stay out of it.

After the cousin’s death, then they took another look at the man, who had other victims…
@bijouxbroussard that’s a shocking story!!! I’m so sorry.
It's extremely sad when they can't see a better option at such a young age. I worked for a time in a child protection team and there was a 14yr old girl who would attempt suicide and self harm at any available opportunity if not constantly monitored. It was literally her only goal. It was pretty much known that one day she'd succeed. It was such a sad state for a child to end up in but in her case it was a product of the kind of trauma that adults can inflict on children. In other cases it's the trauma that children can inflict on each other, particularly in this age of social media and of not caring about anything being seen as cool.
@InfoTunaBotTheReturn Yes it is terribly sad. I was so shocked when I heard this. You must be so strong to have done that job, it would break me. Apparently there was some online and school bullying. The police took her devices to investigate.
@InterdimensionalSideEye that scenario literally makes me feel sick

It's not something you can come to terms with. It's something that will never go away and you have to learn to hold onto the good memories and not the absent of them. It seems pretty young but i drank a whole bottle of nighttime dimetapp when i was 8 hoping i wouldn't wake up. My parents didn't care enough and i didn't care enough to think about what it would do to my parents if I succeeded. Ive noticed that younger and younger kids are suicidal due to social media.
My nephew did but he was an adult and it's devastated my family..can't even imagine if had been when he was just a child
@Bexsy I saw that as well. Two of my cousins also did as young people. It was a brother and sister a couple of years apart. It wrecked the whole family also.

I don't think you do... Not easily anyway.. and certainly not quickly... A lot of soul searching....
Convivial · 26-30, F
@InterdimensionalSideEye I don't think anyone ever imagines it happening to them..
@Convivial I have kids…I thought about mine and I thought I would go fucking insane if that happened to one of them.
Convivial · 26-30, F
@InterdimensionalSideEye a natural reaction I think..
hunkalove · 70-79, M
The first time I tried to kill myself I was 6.
@hunkalove 6? wtf..why and how?
hunkalove · 70-79, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye I was very unhappy. I laid down on the basement floor and let all of the air out of my lungs and tried not to take another breath.
@hunkalove that breaks my heart man. I’m so so sorry you had to feel that as a little guy.

I'm not sure you will my nephew when he was in his early twenties committed suicide.
It was one of the worst outpouring of grief from the family I ever saw.
@Justmeraeagain I agree, I don’t think you’d ever get over or better from something like that. So so sad.
That’s so horrifying, absolutely gut wrenching. I seem to be hearing more and more about these tragedies and ask myself the same question, how do the parents manage to go on, to live life with a broken heart. Perhaps having other children to raise gives them a reason to live but I can’t imagine anything more painful and nothing will ever be the same.
@OlderSometimesWiser honestly I feel just like you. Beside the pain imagine the guilt….the poor siblings left behind that have trauma so young. It’s terrible.

Your friend needs you at the moment. Just be there for her. Try to get her out of her environment for a bit.

Coming to terms with the loss of a child is hard for anyone. And suicide always leaves others to pick up the pieces. How do you think the child’s friends feel at this time. They need comfort too.
HikingMan · 56-60, M
They don’t.
Trust me.
@HikingMan no they wouldn’t would they. So sad.

One cant easily.

According to national data, overdose suicides nationally have risen significantly over the last 10 years. There is some geographical variation.
tenente · 36-40, M
Class mate of mine killed herself in grade 10. I learned later that her parents marriage ended in divorce because the shared trauma was too much for them.
@tenente I’m sorry about your friend and I’m not surprised that the marriage ended.
WolfGirlwh0r3 · 36-40, T
How little are you paying attention to your child that they feel suicide is their only choice.....
ineedadrink · 56-60, M
How beyond awful. I remember holding a large kitchen knife to my stomach when I was around 10 or 11 but the thought "this will make Mommy really sad" stopped me. Now that I have a child of my own, I know that I would be wrecked for the rest of my existence.
@ineedadrink wrecked the rest of my existence. That’s a good way of describing it. It would mine too.
i hear too many stories of young people taking their lives because of what they endure over the internet. mainly because of bullying, blackmail etc.
@beermeplease me too. It’s good the world is taking steps to limit social media usage at young ages.

I'm so sorry. I have had suicides in and near to the extended family. One doesn't really come to terms with it as a parent.
WanderingHelplessly · 51-55, M
That is sad, and I don't know how I'd come to terms with that as a parent. I remember wanting to end it all when I was that age. The teen years can be rough.
@WanderingHelplessly it is. I think it’s important to see if they’re ok, but sometimes they wouldn’t say if they aren’t anyway.
WanderingHelplessly · 51-55, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye True. Being a parent is hard work.
@WanderingHelplessly IT REALLY IS. And expensive
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
I imagine it haunts and hurts for the rest of life.
Likestoenjoylife · 51-55, M
They never really do its even harder on their siblings
@Likestoenjoylife yeah I was thinking of the sibling. They not only have to lived with parent who are traumatised but also guilt and anger. Sigh. So sad isn’t it?
Likestoenjoylife · 51-55, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye the people know the older teen daughter found her
@Likestoenjoylife that’s so. I don’t have words
Dan193 · 31-35, M
Idk that.. difficult
@Dan193 me neither
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
I don't feel like I'd be able to or see much purpose in going on.
@SpectralMourning same. Apparently the woman said as much, but she has a 9 year old and said she’s going on for him. Single parent too.
SpectralMourning · 46-50, M
@InterdimensionalSideEye Yes, sounds like she doesn't have a choice. I can't imagine having to move forward from something like that. I wish her the strength to do it.
@SpectralMourning me too…and I feel just like you.
lissah · 36-40, F
I dont even have any words. Thats so extremely sad.
@lissah same really.
I imagine you don't 😭
