Interesting, but not close.

That would just be my twin brother. Even then I'd use the word, "stayed" loosely. But, it not from lack of trying. I mean, I see him maybe twice a year at the most. One year didn't see him at all, cause he was really sick (bed ridden apparently) one Christmas, we drove down to Milwaukee for. We said, we'd pop in, just to have a quick hi and bye. But we were denied. (Probably a good thing, now that I think about it.)
This was well before covid, so it wasn't that kind of phobic thinking or prevention. But ok 👍, see you next year.
Last time I spoken with a good friend from HS was in 2021, at the Packers vs. Rams Sunday Night game at Green Bay. We caught up a little, but that was that. Plus it was a cold 🥶 and damp, with snow on the way. Think it was 11F/-11C when I looked at halftime.

I met my best buddy in second grade. We had a field day in school with all classes together and somehow the 2 of us ended up together. At the end of the day as we walked to the buses I still remember him telling me, " you're ok".
Second grade was a long long time ago and even though we're several states apart we still text each other at least twice a week.
A few years ago he texted me " In case I never said it, thank you for being my friend."
I almost teared up.

They know your back story and history and still remain your friend... I've got one , best friends for over 40+ years have known her since we were 3, in Sunday school together....

I saw a meme once that showed two boys walking into a wood. The caption said, "The day you spent with your best friend, not realising it was the last day you'd ever play together."
It didn't mean one of them died, it means there does come a day, for one reason or another, that you played with a friend for the very last time, without realising the importance of those last few hours. It made me think about all the friends I lost touch with.

@Richard65 Like Puff the Magic Dragon, the boy stops going.

I met my buddy in grade school and we're still friends today. It's very comforting to have a friend that long that knows you and pretty much everything about you

The closest I come to that are my siblings and cousins. What’s been hard is the younger cousins who have passed on.
Having held someone as a baby, watched them live their lives, then seeing them, grown, in their casket, is just so difficult…😞

It's good, although it is hard to stay close when we are 800 miles apart. My wife and I have friends like that.

Comforting, scary.
Comforting in the ease of being known. No explanations on anything, they know you as you know yourself.
Scary that they won't allow you to hide. You're accountable, always. Scary in that we are getting old.

It's amazing. My best friend and I were born just half an hour apart in the same hospital and we've hung out almost every day since

Normal!
My American family moved so many times I could never be normal!
And community is not possible when there's so many people from US wars who killed for the USA in our town. We're poor and they ain't. We're displaced and they're fully housed!
