Do you have a friend who always asks for rides everywhere?

It’s ruining the friendship. Who in their late 20s doesn’t have a vehicle??? Not counting big city people with public transit.

Had a sister that was doing that several times a week. The bus stop was right in front of her apartment but she wanted to be chauffeured to the stores etc. Her bragging on how much money she saved by not having a car and paying for insurance, registration and maintenance didn’t set with me either. Not to mention gas. She got a bus pass shortly after I stopped taking her places.
Yeah. He’s got some medical condition that keeps him from being able to get a license. I forget what, but it wasn’t seizures.

It really is difficult to do some everyday things when you can’t drive yourself. I get if people can’t afford a car; especially these days. But it’s very limiting to be without one.

I live in a small city and don't have a car but I don't ask anyone for a lift. I use public transport or taxi. If someone offers me a lift I feel awkward because I'm like...should I pay them? 😂

@CrazyMusicLover Same I live in a small town and don't have a car. If I really need a lift for some reason, I do pay the person. It's super rare that I need it though, only if I have to take my dog somewhere, since he's on the bigger side.

Years ago I noticed dudes would befriend/flirt with me for rides. Got old really quick.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@SW-User lol! That’s kind of like a hobo sexual
SW-User
@Flenflyys definitely met a few of those types 😂

I've always been fortunate that I've always had a car since I was 15 but I've learned that besides being able to afford a car you also have insurance and maintenance expenses that go with it, now a days it's not that easy when you're first starting out, luckily I don't have many friends and the friends I have all have cars.
Degbeme · 70-79, M
Yeah she is called my wife.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@Degbeme lol that’s different that’s a husbandly duty
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
I didn’t have a car for many years but always paid gas money. I didn’t realize that it puts constraints on peoples time as well. Now that I own a car I don’t actually accept gas money but I also only offer rides to people whose company I enjoy.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
Nope, not me. Sometimes there are people with a late start in their life (myself included).

I would be one of those people if I chose not to use my independence whenever I can. I don't have a car but I bike mostly everywhere
SW-User
Before I drove ..I always used public transport...I don't like asking anyone for rides anywhere..I feel like I'm being a pain
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User most wouldn’t mind but when you hear someone brag on how much money they are saving by not having a vehicle and then using you for a taxi service it gets old. She should have kept her mouth shut about that. Someone else did the same thing where I worked and would demand rides. When she started talking about how she didn’t need a car, could get a ride any time she needed it and about all the money she was saving those rides ended. They both had enough money to buy and maintain a vehicle if they wanted to.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@cherokeepatti this. She could reprioritize and get a car, she’s certainly able. But why would she when everyone’s driving her around?
SW-User
@Flenflyys yeah that's not ok
SW-User
That would have been me in my 20s 🙋‍♂️
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@SW-User nice to live in an area where that’s possible
SW-User
@Flenflyys I work from home so it makes it a bit easier. We have a TV series here called Race Across the world, where people have to make a long journey without flying. The last series was set in Canada, you have virtually no public transport 🤣
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@SW-User yea it’s really bad here lol
I have friends that are always telling me where to go
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@Ghostinthemachine sounds like good friends
@Flenflyys with friends like those…
SW-User
friends, no, but coworkers.

this one guy I work with is 28 and still has his parents drive him to work
glad I live in the booneys I see 10 or 15 cars a day people going to work same ones coming from work,
Had that friend. Knew they were paying for gas.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@Sojournersoul even still, they assume
That everytime I use my vehicle is an opportunity for a ride because I’m going anyway. Sometimes I’d like to do my own thing
@Flenflyys well making them pay for gas, they found another ride.
MyNameIsHurl · 41-45, F
No, and thank goodness cuz it's hard for me to say no
WhateverWorks · 36-40
As someone who can’t drive because of my disability, I have always found this phenomena fascinating because I hate asking people for rides lol..

No, but I do have friends who are constantly asking for loans because they make bad financial decisions. :(
ThaiGirl · 26-30, F
Actually I'm that friend sometimes 😅
I don't know how to drive any vehicle
DownTheStreet · 56-60, M
I tell them I’m busy and suggest they ask you instead
Ducky · 31-35, F
I have a spouse who does.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@Ducky lol I guess I’m guilty of that
EnigmaticGeek · 61-69, M
No, but I do have a 92 yo mom who does...
JaggedLittlePill · 46-50, F
My 18 year old son does not have a license. He struggles with a lot of stuff.

He wants to drive. The problem is he has serious anxiety and depression and is diagnosed Bipolar.

Many people in their 20s might not have a car or a license.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@JaggedLittlePill I would drive my own child, and a teenager is different. Where I live it’s impossible to go without a vehicle. If someone has mental health issues affecting their ability to drive they need to live in an area with good public transit if they want any quality of life
SW-User
A friend in constant need is a pest.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@SW-User damn right
MrSmooTh · 31-35, M
You mean you have a sidekick? I want one.
HannibalMontanimal · 26-30, M
There was a guy who I used to work with he would always get rides from his grandma. I would always come up to him and ask him when he’s buying his own fucking car he would always make up some lame excuse and he’s 26 years old no license no car he just spends all his money on video games
SW-User
My ex-gf before Covid was in her late 20s and didn’t have a car. She refused to even try to get her license because of anxiety. It became a burden to always have to drive her along with everything else I needed to be responsible for.
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@SW-User that sounds awful. Was it a factor in breaking up?
SW-User
@Flenflyys Yep. Plus we were in different life phases and had different desires and goals in life, and she wasn’t exactly mentally stable as I came to discover.
I got along without a car by riding a bike for a while. But that was because I was in between cars. Luckily I survived this period, somehow, and anyone with a job should be able to get a used car.
basilfawlty89 · 36-40, M
I dunno. Poor people or people with disabilities?
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
@basilfawlty89 I’m talking specifically about my non disabled friend. She’s not exactly poor but if she is it’s because of her choices. Capability is not an issue
