Participation ribbons or trophies.
Every minute of their free time planned and filled with activities.
To be begged or paid to do chores around the house.
To go on summer holidays to a camp.
All the technology.

It is wild to me, all of it. Our parents had little to do with us, really. They weren’t worried about our feelings or our mental health. They didn’t volunteer at our school or make our friends for us or tell us everything we did was great. There was no ADHD, suicide, self-harming, or food allergies. Nobody young suffered from migraines or chronic pain and it was a good thing because our parents never gave us over the counter meds. There weren’t seatbelts and helmets and safety pads and childseats, and I think those have been good improvements, but all the chemicals and screens have done more harm than imagined. While more quality interaction with ones children is good, I do think too much interference robs them of the chance to figure things out.

Just about everything. My first years were on a cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere during WWII; the toys weren't even metal (for the war effort) and it was before plastic. And then I was bedridden for 4 years.
I never had a play date. I did have sleep overs.

Water bottles! I mean kids have always drank water and it’s a great thing but kids seem to drink water so much now and always have a water bottle with them. Just never remember that being a thing when I was a kid.
TheFragile · 46-50, M
@lovelychicadee kids nowadays would never know what it's like to be outside and drink from the hose.

The need to talk back to or challenge teachers. In my day, the teacher’s authority was final.

@BloviatingBuffoon Just be sure that people who take them are truly responsible and have common sense. There was a case here when kids were taken outdoors from school despite the bad weather forecast for the day and sadly, one boy died when a dry branch fell on him. The forecast clearly said it was going to be windy and of all places, they took them to the area full of old trees.
@CrazyMusicLover yeah they usually cancel if it’s too windy and rainy etc. I’m still worried though
lovelychicadee · 46-50, F
I suppose when it was safer most of us were just out playing in the woods after school@BloviatingBuffoon
Devices. Kids will hang out and not be interacting, all on their phones.
They aren’t learning to socialize in person, just through a screen.
But maybe that’s how the future will be anyways, which saddens me

Smart phones obviously, but also salon visits. My mom cut my hair (unfortunately) until I was 13. 🙃

What I am doing now. Face in a phone screen.
I am at a Dunkin' eating breakfast. When I was a kid we almost never went out to eat, it was called Dunkin' Donuts, and I don't even think it served breakfast!

I think so, the line for the drive through was out into the street.
So I went around to the other entrance to enter the parking lot, but the way was blocked by two illegally parked cars one one side, and another car on my side sitting idle with their engine running. I had to honk about three times before they moved. Sheesh.
But I am sitting now. I never run.

My kid never had a play date thank the gods. I'm not sure my introversion could have taken that.
It's frightening to me how young her peers were before getting their first smart phones. I ended up caving earlier than I had intended on getting her one.

I don't even know what kids have today. Well, apart from the obvious things like tablets, smartphones, graphic tablets and thousands of apps they can choose from to be creative with.
RedBaron · M
I'm 62, and my mother would sometimes call my friends' mothers to invite the kid over for what is now called a play date.
Muthafukajones · 46-50, M
I think it’s more called a play date when the two or more children are brought together by the parents to a location.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
I hear children have baby showers. Very commercial idea to coerce friends into buying presents

@Cigarguy101 never thought about that. It has many positive and negative aspects but it must help out a lot of kids.

The internet. Obviously it existed, but as a kid I could hardly even grasp what the internet was.
