Have You Ever Cooked Quinoa or Eaten Some Of It?

I cooked some last night for the first time. Made a simple salad after it cooled down with chopped green onions, tomatoes, sweet orange mini-peppers, and peeled cucumber. Made a salad dressing with olive oil, lemon juice, a bit of red wine vinegar, salt, pepper, a bit of garlic powder & quite a bit of dry thyme herb. It made a large bowlful and thought we’d have it for dinner, but just finished a small bowl of what was left last night….it hit the spot. Tasted like a combination of tabouli and macaroni salad. I can’t eat wheat now so this filled the bill. Plus it’s a complete protein and has quite a bit of iron in it. Nice cool salad for summer. Am planning on making quinoa-maple pudding for breakfast tomorrow morning.

@ImpeccablyImperfect Winco has at least 3 types of quinoa in their bulk bins. I got the organic white kind for this dish. It made a pretty salad with all those colors.

@ImpeccablyImperfect they have a quinoa salad at Costco that's alright!

@Fullmetal Saw the recipe for it on Pinterest

Yet to even see quinoa being solid anywhere here.

They actually discontinued selling many of my favorite vegetables as well, so I'm not surprised in not seeing anything different.

I'm an omnivore, yet I do love a wide variety of things in my own salads. Made a huge salad the other night! 😋

@DeWayfarer am thinking of buying a 25 pound bag of it now
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I might have to start buying vegetables online. I hate doing that because I can't see what I am getting though. Who knows if it's too ripe or too green 🤷🏻‍♂️
ravenwind43 · 51-55, F
That sounds really good. I l enjoy quinoa, haven't had it for awhile.
BalthazarBlake · 61-69, M
I rather like quinoa, Amaranth is very similar to it.
BalthazarBlake · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I had to buy mine online, I've never see it in my local supermarkets.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@BalthazarBlake are you in the USA ?
BalthazarBlake · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I live in London, UK.

I cook it like rice (I like the multicolored version) and stir in chopped parsley and sliced almonds. Good side dish.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Harmonium1923 I think it is one of those staples that can be flavored however you like, very versatile and adaptable. I could make a pilaf with it.

I have eaten with roasted guinea pig

akindheart · 61-69, F
i need to follow your lead on this healthy eating
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart Pinterest has hundreds of recipes. I need to get more protein in my diet and it’s not heavy like meat
akindheart · 61-69, F
@cherokeepatti i had cheesy quinoa. not my favorite.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@akindheart You can make whatever flavors you want. I am going to make maple pudding and if the boy likes that as much as he did the salad I will make chocolate pudding with it too

Yes it's pretty good
SW-User
@cherokeepatti it's just good to try new things
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User I regret not trying this years ago. Even if just because I can’t have wheat and other gluten grains. It satisfied my craving for tabouli last night and I had craved that one for years.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SW-User The boy has eaten it several times because his friend is from Peru and his friends mother would give him a ride home from the YMCA sometimes but would take him to her house and let the boys have some food after they worked out. I don’t know what her recipe was but will ask him what it tasted like.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Yes, I always have some in the cupboard, I eat it often.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Scribbles I will start having it more and rice less. Rice can be healthy as a resistant starch but needs to be consumed after it’s been cooked and chilled overnight in the refrigerator and not reheated. Good for salads.
4meAndyou · F
I've had it once or twice. Not my fave...but not bad!
Canuckle · 51-55, M
Yes it’s delicious.
SW-User
Ya, many times. I love it
