What is a dish you grew up with...

That your parents or family had when they were growing up too? (That you dont see much of today)

Pastina with milk, butter, and salt. Mmm 😋
pinto beans, corn bread, fried potatoes,turnip greens butter milk,
Lilnonames · F
@jackrabbit10 with ham is better
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@jackrabbit10 I used to make that about once a month for Sunday evening dinner. My daughter would take the leftover beans and make refried beans & cheese burritos the next day.
@Lilnonames ham hocks,🍖,i forgot that
Lilymoon · F
Roast beef....I have a hard time eating it now 😝
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M

Lilymoon · F
@MrBrownstone shut up 🤣
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Lilymoon I did.
giant vats of handmade meatballs and sauce with rigatoni. the trick is to brown the meatballs first in the oven, bake until brown on outside. then throw them in the sauce to cook fully and incorporate all the flavors with the sauce.
MethDozer · M
@lovelywarpedlemon yessss. You must braize the balls
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Chicken & Dumplings
Mom made the best breaded fried veal cutlets served on a fresh Italian roll. hard to find veal in supermarkets here today
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@saragoodtimes Mm I love veal cutlet, or parm!
@Coralmist to many use veal patties today to make parm. it's nowhere near as good unless you use cutlets same with chicken parm have to use chicken cutlets which are just as hard to find
LadyGrace · 70-79
Chili Mac. Mom made it so good.
Cream of wheat. It's a hot cereal.
@Coralmist I still have oatmeal sometimes. It's more of a winter thing.
CobaltToad · 100+, M
@WonderGirl1 I liked that
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@WonderGirl1 I had oatmeal yesterday !
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M

Stuffed peppers & stuffed cabbage

This is Romanian style.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@DeWayfarer that’s a really great way to cook them with other veggies, it’s a meal by itself.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti you have to half cook the rice before hand though for the stuffing.
I really do like Kjötsúpa with rúgbrauð. I dip the rúgbrauð in my Kjötsúpa broth. It’s yummy.

Coralmist · 41-45, F
@JustGoneNow mm looks good!! Is it like chicken soup?
@Coralmist sort of, but with lamb. It’s an Icelandic lamb soup made from braising cuts of lamb or mutton and stored root vegetables. The meat is braised bone-in and creates its own stock while the coarse root vegetables give the soup a hearty texture and a subtle sweetness.
Gusman · 61-69, M
My Grandmother made the best Shepherd's pie using the left over Sunday Lamb Roast.
The meat would be put though a mincer.
Rilyn · 31-35, F
Stuffed marrows are my absolute favourite with oven baked potatoes. Home made.

I don't know at all what dishes my parents grew up with. 😅
Tbh everything my parents ate when I was a child they still eat now. lol They aren't fond of change. Whereas I'll try most things once. Expect cephalopods and cetaceans as I consider them to be self aware creatures.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@canusernamebemyusername so which dish is one , that you like, that you dont see a lot of?
@Coralmist Probably a certain type of ham. Like actual aged and preserved with salt ham ham. Not the mechanically separated and then thin sliced sandwich ham.
Fluffybull · F
Rabbit stew.
Oster1 · M
@Fluffybull 🤗💖👍🌷
MarineBob · 56-60, M
Fried chicken
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@MarineBob I don’t know if it’s as common any more to fix fried chicken from scratch with all the sides since these fried chicken restaurants got popular (plus buffets with it on the line). Nothing can beat homemade though.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
SOS. I was told my father loved it. My sister says we were too poor sometimes. Slimy nasty greasy garbage made me want to puke.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@hunkalove i grew up with it too..my mom ate it growing up. Im not a fan but ill eat it if I dont have anything else.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@hunkalove I really hated that too.
11knaves11 · 41-45, M
"not enough sauce" so you gotta mix the sauce and spaghetti together..... totally a turn off for me...
Ingwe · F

11knaves11 · 41-45, M
@Ingwe I need to see a sheep's head with 🥞 on it pls....
Chipped beef, mushroom gravy over toast.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Coralmist I grew up on American Goulash. Elbow noodles, hamburger and tomatoes.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@SweetMae I love that meal..yum.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@SweetMae we had that on the farm, it was one of the easier meals on the days we had a lot going on outdoors and my aunt wanted a quicker dinner and less to clean up. I think she opened up a jar of corn and we had that too.
Brussel sprouts.....

And I still hate them...!
Poppies · 61-69, F

@Stereoguy One way I used to make them was with a can of cream of mushroom soup, onions, and grated cheese, plus some salt and pepper. I don’t use canned soup for anything anymore but it’s easy enough to make it from scratch and it tastes better. Also could make a white sauce and that would work good.
