What kind of a job would you like to do during retirement?

I'm a "retired" engineer (Got laid off May 15th of 2024). Finding I need something to do to stay active and prefer to get paid. Going back into engineering would be ok but let's face it. I'm too old. They only want young people. Plus, i only want to work part time. There are lots of teaching positions available but paraprofessional teaching at minimum wage seems risky. A local bakery needs a part time sheeter/laminator so I'm checking it out. Early start time is fine. It's close. I like baking. Part time...check. It would pay for groceries and an occasional massage.

I was lucky after retiring as an engineer in the aerospace industry. Our church needed parttime help, and I was qualified. They came to me and offered me a job that allowed me to work my own schedule, except for Sunday. I did it for four years before really retiring. I suggest you do what you like to do, even if the pay isn't great.

@exexec i will be doing stuff at the church too as needed. What day is it anyway?

@Tastyfrzz It must be Friday because I have a wedding rehearsal tonight.

The bakery sounds ideal.

Could you teach general engineering skills at a basic school level? To inspire and mentor young people not yet decided on their careers?

I intend to teach maths when I am retired, for as long as I still have my marbles
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@SunshineGirl At a very basic level I suppose. Statics, friction, beams, levers, screws, ... Stress and Strain, Materials and their properties. Drawing tolerances. Press and Slip fits, tap sizes, flatness, waviness, and lay,...Once calculus hits I'm done. Been too long to do heavy integration or differential equations like fod dynamics. Linear algebra is all canned now. Probably would do better to focus on CAPA, FMEA, DFM, and SPC and CAD with SolidWorks. FEA if it's available. Rapid prototyping. Project planning. Process writing, Process qualifications and Validations. Distributions, average, sigma, mode, regression, DIDOV, DMAIC and LEAN six sigma and other stuff i've kind of forgotten. My software training was mostly Fortran but I've mostly used Basic, FCL, J, and Python. I've done a bit of Matlab for fft analysis. Electrical stuff is basically all E=IR and P= i^2 R series and parallel circuitry. Control theory requires LaPlace transforms and modeling of systems. Heat transfer and thermodynamics weren't too bad but can get complicated.
Vibrations damping, and shock were what I mostly worked on.
I just got fired and now I'm really retired.
Nobody can do my last job and survive on the income - it's kind of a retired person's job! That's too exploitative. Think about it.

@daydeeo there you go!

@Roundandroundwego Right you are

mentoring or teaching - I'm gonna keep on for another 5 years though, and that's my plan.

I'm a brine taster over at the pickle factory but I'd rather be an olive stuffer.

I would love to either work with animals or open up an alternative healing wellness centre
Penny · 46-50, F

What’s retirement?
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Northwest In my case i didn’t have much of a choice. I do have money saved up but it's the time passing by and the loneliness that gets to you. One should get paid for playing anyway. No more passwords and log in stuff. No more annual reviews...
Person in charge of finding money in mysterious places..

Finders keepers..

Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@DrWatson Unfortunately, I am prone to getting gout so i have to stay clear of the stuff. You can have mine.
