NeuroticByNature · 41-45, F
Sea urchin.
@NeuroticByNature ikr?
Whyyyyy😭
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Poke greens, I mean they have to be cooked in 2 or 3 changes of water and rinsed well before eating or they are toxic.
Matt85 · 36-40, M
brussle sprouts
rocky mountain oysters
swirlie · 31-35, F
@saragoodtimes
Have you ever had them?! 😋
@swirlie no, maybe someday

@saragoodtimes
My dad always said "no, maybe someday", when he actually meant "not a snowball's chance in hell is this ever going to happen!".

Anytime you ever want to know what they're like, just ask!

Olives. Who decided it was possible to leach out the bitterness to make them edible?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@dancingtongue Acorns too. They are extremely bitter until they have the tannins leached out with salt by boiling them in several changes of water. When I was 9 years old and home alone I collected a bowl of acorns and shelled them and boiled them in salt water. The water turned black. I did it a couple more times and the water was clear. Then I baked them on a cookie sheet like roasted peanuts and ate them. I had no one to tell me how to do it, it was an experiment. I think the genetic memory from my Cherokee ancestry came into play on this one.

Snails. And I believe the answer to that is: starvation. If early man was starving, he would try to eat anything he could find. I'm quite sure that there was a LOT of trial and error.
Cashews:
They grow inside a fruit you can eat .
So far so good .

But the actual cashew is inside a double layered shell lined with an oil, that's fumes are poisonous , and to touch it causes reactions like poison ivy.

How dafuq did someone get past all these toxic protections ...for a tiny nut, and go ...

...geez that was worth it
LibertineWolf · 51-55, M

@HumanEarth i LOVE octopus. I love to eat it and I love to watch it - totally mesmerising.
HumanEarth · 56-60, M
I wonder what got humans into wanting to eat it.
2ndtimeguy · 61-69, M
Turnips they taste awful raw and worse when cooked. John Pinnette the late comedian had a line GOD made the turnip and decided it didnt come out well so he decided to bury it deep in the ground but someone found it and dug it up!
Azlotto · M
Maggot cheese...I heard it pairs well with Civet coffee.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Fugu or pufferfish. There's no known antidote for it's poison.

Prepare it wrong, you die.
Adrift · 61-69, F
@DeWayfarer yeah it makes you wonder how many times they got it wrong and who was the next volunteer.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Adrift you got to know it's in the thousands. People still die because it's made wrong.

You have to be a licensed master, in only making Fugu, just to make it legally in Japan.
Thodsis · 51-55, M
The chilli pepper.

That first tingle should have been off-putting.
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Thodsis
Yes, especially if added to oatmeal or pablum
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Thodsis did you know that there's a whole line of plants called the nightshade family that are related and can be grafted together to grow them.

Chili peppers are related to potatoes and even tomatoes. All originated in South America.

All their leaves are as well mildly poisonous.

You would think they would leave each alone because of the leaves.

[c=800000] can't think now [/c]
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Raaii
Please come back when your thinking is working. Thank you for stopping by!
Raaii · 22-25, F
@swirlie [c=800000] I hv a food habit near to vegetarian
And I feel all fruits, vegetables are naturally edible
Except the poisonous ones
Some wild fruits are so insulting
Still I can't find anything to answer [/c]
swirlie · 31-35, F
@Raaii
I think you did pretty good if you still can't find anything to answer!
eventtemple123 · 22-25, M
Blue cheese. Normally you don't eat blue mold.
Umile · 41-45, F
Coffee.

Popcorn.

Cacao.
IM5688 · 61-69, M
Most food really. How did people ever go from "my stomach is rumbling" to "let's put some random stuff in my mouth to see if that helps"?
RenFur · 70-79, M
Pizzle - look it up. Apparently it's not only a treat for dogs.
Elanor · F
Chocolate and coffee
swirlie · 31-35, F
Lamb testicles! I actually love them and they taste very different than prairie oysters which are bull testicles which of course are beef.
Honey, I mean think about it
