I think you should go to a few wine tastings...or host your own, which you can do for about $600 to $800. You can learn a lot by tasting, and many wine stores offer the service.
You might find that some California wines are as good as French wines.
Never count out the French, but Chianti, which is my favorite Italian wine, was a research project of mine one year. I found out the names of all the best ones, and went to taste them on my birthday in the Italian North end in Boston...with tapas!

There’s an old idea that car reliability and wine quality are inversely related. Jspsnese wine is UN drinkable and German wine isn’t much better. France and Italy produce some pretty unreliable cars but the wine is wonderful. California wine is approaching excellent so be wary buying a Ford or GM.
