Comment on the follwing statement

Wife says to husband: "Maybe we should have a trial separation so we could date other people".
dancingtongue · 80-89, M Best Comment
My response would be "why do we need a separation for that to occur? How about an open marriage?"
islanderPEI · 56-60, M
@dancingtongue agree - turned out I am very much a cuckold.
dancingtongue · 80-89, M
@islanderPEI Enjoy. I did, the few times I got the opportunity with my late partner. My late wife, before her, never was willing. Felt I would be too jealous, or use it as justification for chasing other women.

Husband says "Don't worry about the separation part. You date other people and I'll watch" !

Not this husband, though...
What’s the objective? That if they find others they prefer to be with, they will continue with the separation?
And if they don’t find anyone, they will stay together?
islanderPEI · 56-60, M
@CookieCrumbs Wife felt that in order to "date" a separation was needed. Once she understood a separation was not a pre-requisite to dating, the notion of a trial became different. Trial open marriage. At the end of the trial - does it stay open or revert to a typical marriage.

Well I would need a lot more context to understand what was going on there. She could be trying to get more romantic attention from him, trying to wake him up that something is missing between them. Or, maybe they've both talked about curiosity about other people? Or, this marriage could be on its way out...

She already is

My wife dates other men. We are a married couple. She comes home to me.

People grow apart over time, but that doesn't mean that they don't still care for each other. In this case, the wife is telling her husband, "I want something else in life, but I don't want to lose what I have with you." Her motives may be genuine love, or maybe she doesn't have the courage to make a clean break on her own. Who knows?
carpediem · 61-69, M
she's way ahead of the curve on this one
specman · 51-55, M
She already has someone in mind.

Translation: "I've found someone else and am actively cheating. I'd like to bring it out into the open so I can continue to see this person without calling attention to my indiscretions."

Just don't go lookin' for love at one of them lesbian biker bars. Them gals'll rip your balls off and make you eat them. And I know that for a fact, Jack!
miklyn86 · 36-40, M
My comment...'why should we separate? Just lets date other people and then compare notes. And if you (and he) likes, we could watch each other!!!!
justanothername · 51-55, M
My question would be why do you want to date other men? What do you think is wrong with our marriage?
allygator18 · 22-25, F
if it's in court, it's hard to tell who is right until the jury makes a decision.

Tried this with my college gf. Did not work out in my favor. She has someone in mind and is asking for a hall pass.

My response would be "No need to prolong this, let's just get a divorce."
