Found out what test my boy "failed'

So we get to the school for the meeting and it's with his homeroom teacher and the nurse.

So I asked them what was going on. First off they apologized for the email. It should of had more information about the meeting but a sub teacher sent it out.

So them the nurse goes on to tell me they school does a annual hearing and eye test. She strongly recommend we get his eyes tested soon but the biggest concern was his hearing. She said her test shows he could have minor to major hearing loss in his left ear. She said she would get him into a specialist right away.
His eyes didn't surprise me, I wear glasses so does his mother. But the hearing I was shocked and asked how could I possibly miss this.

She went on to say it's common to not notice these when it effects only one ear. She gave me some things to look out for and the number of a doctor they recommend.

Oh wow yeah not what I was to be told. Not really sure what to think but looking over the list I can see some of the things she listed.

So I got him going to get him an appointment as soon as possible for both his eyes and ears.

Around the same age, my son had to have tubes put in his ears. Infective matter had built up in the ear canal, so he had earaches now and then. His father's side of the family had a history of going deaf, probably because, as children, they had the same issue and were never treated.

With the tubes, the infected stuff was able to drain out of the ear, and eventually the tube could be removed, and he was fine, and could hear just fine out of that ear.

@4meAndyou I've got him an appointment with his doctor next week so he can do a more thorough exam and we'll see if he wants him to see a specialist.

I know a little about what it is like.

I have worn glasses for nearsightedness since the sixth grade, and still do. And I have had tinnitus in both ears since I was 17 (from playing with loud firecrackers as a stupid teen). Sirens and loud or high pitched music bother me, and I cannot hear conversations in a noisy bar, etc.

When I turned 40 I could no longer read with my glasses on. Fortunately I can still read with them off, enough to write this reply on my phone. For a computer screen I use my glasses and larger fonts.

Two years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes, and then a year later, diabetic retinopathy, which is caused by leaky capillaries in my eyes, caused by sugar damage. I could go blind from it. But I got laser treatments to break them up, and then eyeball *injections* to reduce swelling and growth (my body grows more blood vessels to compensate for the leaks which causes problems, too). I get another eyeball injection next month. The treatment is working. Also, I have gotten my sugars down due to drugs, diet, and exercise.

Good luck!

That's good. I was in second grade before they realized I couldn't see the writing on the blackboard. Glasses opened a whole new world for me.
Cigarguy · M
@exexec yeah and it is part of his plan for him to sit in the front row in his classes so the teachers can keep a better eye on him and he can focus better that way. So that's probably why the eyes didn't get noticed quicker

@Mamapolo2016 yeah I was glad they apologized. The sub shouldn't of sent the email out but she was just trying to be helpful.

Like I said I'm not surprised about him needing glasses but the hearing in his left ear surprised me. I should of noticed it before now.

@YoMomma can just to be clear the school never used the word failed he did LOL. I really wish he would have remembered what test it was it's not every day that they test your eyes and ears at school. This child of mine
