Gotta love a core memory

I'm in the car with my 18 year old son and Wrecking Ball comes on the radio. He chuckles and shares a "core memory" of this song. He was 9 or 10 and at a sleepover at his friend's house. At some point, the friends watch the video for Wrecking Ball - the friend being explicitly forbidden by his mother to do so. The friend later got punished for it.

I was like - wait. He got punished for watching a music video? Wait. What?

We pull up the video. Miley's riding a wrecking ball, at times naked, at times in a tank top and undies. At no point do we see any reproductive bits of course, but it's provocative. Sure.

I wasn't there and I don't know what discussions she had with her son when punishing him. But did this woman think she was protecting her son from online porn? If you ask me, punishing a young boy for looking at a woman's body is a good way to create a life-long pervert.

What do you think?

Punishment is merited for disobedience . . but Miley was not worth picking a fight over. They could be pushed into viewing far worse material.

I think I may have given a small lecture about female objectification . . then joined the boys in mutual admiration 😅

Sorry Sunshine, you can't have it both ways! Life doesn't work that way.

@swirlie Lord make me pure, but not yet.

@SunshineGirl
I learned a very long time ago to not ask the good Lord for purity until I was absolutely sure that I was on my way out and he was taking me home...

@SomeMichGuy I'd have discussions with them to understand their thoughts and desires, and find ways to satisfy curiosities in healthy ways.
Because very soon, in just a few years, that very same kid will have easy access to all those things. Do you want him to have the mental tools to be able to deal with the barrage of life, or should he be ignorant, repressed and act out in ways he won't even understand himself?

My mum wouldn't let me watch a Herbie film..The Love Bug..she thought that had something my eyes were too young to see!!!
But I can see that mum's point of view with regards to the Miley video..seeing a near naked hot woman at 9 would definitely cause giggles,possibly movements in the boxers!!!..
But do see your point too.theyd soon find it and see for themselves anyway!!

I think it's very sad that some parents forget what it was like to be young and curious.
Well, the kid was punished for doing something his mother had specifically told him not to do. We don't actually know what her concerns were about the video.

I do concur. That type of over-reaction creates weirdness. You can see it here all the time, people telling their childhood stories in one post, then about their adjacent fetish in another
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@faery This poor kid feels weird every time he sees a demolition site and he doesn't know why...

@Fallflower He's probably here looking for people to dm about it

I agree, over controlling parents spark rebellion in children
JustEd · 41-45, M
🤷‍♂. It was a good video
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@JustEd Very entertaining indeed!

@Fallflower 😂. Good thing she didn’t catch him watching Britney Spears.

@HobNoblin Protecting is fine. It's the forbidding and the punishment that gets me. The fact that he couldn't wait to share it with his buddies in secret...
@Fallflower Exactly

Had to go watch the video. 😂😂😂
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@JackDaniels I CAME IN LIKE A WRECKING BAAAALLLLL will be in my head all day now

@Fallflower Mine too now. 😂😂😂

I wish more people understood this.

For your son's friend to be forbidden to watch the video would tell me that his mom already saw the video for 'Wrecking Ball' while not in his presence, otherwise how would she know enough about the video to keep it censored from her son's personal growth?

I wonder if she turned off the video the moment she saw Miley riding that wrecking ball in her underwear so as to keep her mind pure and untainted?
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
Maybe she just told him he was to young to watch it. At that age they would just giggle over seeing boobs anyway.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@JackDaniels Right? I think she made too much of it.
JackDaniels · 46-50, M
@Fallflower She did make to much of it.
She would let her son watch a horror film I bet, but a nude body is too much for him to handle…if it wasn’t absurd it would be funny

Perverts of the world unite, let the revolution begin!
Sounds like my mother when I was growing up.
@Fallflower Nah, I'm an Atheist, she's super uber religious.
Fallflower · 46-50, F
@NativePortlander1970 Cool. same actually.
@Fallflower My mother retired as a church secretary, she had the job so she could be in church every day, from the ages of seven to sixteen I was forced to read the holey buy bull from cover to cover each and everg yesr, she got my older brothers and myself our own copies of the one year buy bull.

Properly read, the bible is the main cause of Atheism. - Sir Isaac Asimov
