Summer

Is it just me or do kids now spend way too much time in organized programs for summer? Tennis, swimming, etc. Wen I was a teen we just played outside.

Played outside? By yourself? How did you know what to do without supervision and a program????
AndreaMom · 41-45, F
I know, soooo dangerous, right? :)@snowangelashley

Some structure is good for them. It is really up to the parents to regulate how much extra curricular activity they have.
There is a thought that good school count the list of things you have done...more line items makes you more valuable.

I think that this is nonsense.

Kids need exposure to a wide range of things so that they cam imagine doing various things beyond school, as well as for being exposed to different ways of looking at the world in order to expand their palette of patterns...

What playing outside boiled down to was imagination and resourcefulness. Most imagination is shown digitally now. As for being resourceful, they have Google.

I’m no youngster and I remember being in camp a lot of summers.

Invite friends to watch the Disney channel at home😟
Haha, just kidding☺

Your right, my nieces and nephews have something going on almost all summer, I used to like just hanging out with my friends. And a few girls in my neighborhood lol
swl2jo · 56-60, M
Don’t know if it’s too much time, but I do think summer has gotten shorter. Beginning of next month, they start going back to school.
kindredks · 61-69, M
Youth activities has really become big business. For parent's, they don't want the kids to miss out on anything.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
And got into trouble probably. The worst summer my daughter had was the one that she decided to stay home and not be at camp! It was awful for all concerned!
Bazingaa · 51-55, M
They don’t know how to do that anymore.
mljenkins · 51-55, F
As the world becomes a more and more dangerous place for our youth, structure is all we have left to rely on for their safety and even then sometimes it isn't enough because the ones we leave them with are not safe either
AndreaMom · 41-45, F
@mljenkins but statistically they’ve never been safer
RemovedUsername4422 · 61-69, M
@AndreaMom you are absolutely correct. The world is actually getting safer and safe...

Yes. Way too much organized activities.

When I was young, my Mom just told us to go out and play..and be back by dinner.

I once hopped on a freight train and jumped off two counties away.
samueltyler2 · 80-89, M
My kids and grandkids all went to or go to summer camp. It is great for the kids AND their parents!

Yeah I remember summers of riding bikes / skateboards around town and just spending all my time out in the sun.
Mugin16 · 46-50, M
Probably. But least they play sports and don't spend the entire time on phones or playing computer games.

Not enough free form play. My friends and I all did the same. Just enjoyed the outdoors.
No. At least those are activities to keep them busy and out of trouble.
AlexPett · 26-30, M
you wanna join me for a swim sometime?
vetguy1991 · 51-55, M
Are they old enough for jobs?
river52 · 70-79, M
You are so right
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Did you swim?
That is an extension of the over-scheduled kid during the school year.

I think that the crazy notion that you need 4,000 extra-curricular activities from age 3 mos before birth, excelling in & learning amazing life lessons from each, starting a few non-profits, and hopefully cured at least one major disease or solved a long-standing problem of humanity...just to get into a "good" school...is the bullshit which drives this.

That, and parents who are busy and want babysitters without calling them that...lol
