What family holidays/vacations did you take growing up?
We used to go to Great Yarmouth and stayed on a Caravan site in Caister. I always remember wearing my favourite jelly shoes that I loved to wear so much.
Went to Butlins in Minehead a few times, then when my parents split up my dad used to take us to the Isle of Wight for a week in the summer hols, my mum took us to our Gran's in North East Scotland, two holidays instead of just one so win win lol. Great Yarmouth is nice, went years ago and enjoyed it
I grew up in Georgia and all of our vacations were just long weekends to Jekyll Island, GA or a beach in Florida. We didn't have money or time for more. My wife's family had annual week-long trips to Florida. Her parents traveled a lot, but the kids weren't invited.
Usually we’d go visit family in New Orleans or Atlanta, other times we’d spend part of the summer camping in various parts of the country, or we’d stay in the state. One year we rented a house in Carmel-by-the-Sea with one of my mother’s brothers and his family. It was beautiful, and we had a lot of fun.
Being of the Jewish persuasion, we spent a lot of summers at a hotel/resort in the Catskill mountains of New York. Plenty of activities, plenty of food. Always busy, happy and gassy.
aside from this camping trip in 1977 in oregon while taking a potty break...we went to visit family in germany/austria, hawaii, mexico, other places in my province
Every couple of years we would go see my Grandparents. I tried to get excited about it, but it was hard. All of my cousins were older and not around. So I had to sit there quietly for hours while my parents visited different family members.
Once when I was 16 on the way back from New York we went to Salem Massachusetts for three days and toured the whole Salem Witch Trial stuff. That was really fun. Then when I was a senior in college we went to Paradise Island in the Bahamas for Thanksgiving. My birthday was that week too so it was really special. And for the first time in my life I was actually warm on my birthday. 😊
@robingoodfellow Yes it is. We have all the comforts of home with us. This Spring we want to go back up to Virginia. Visit my parents grave and see old friends. Then my wife is from Rhode Island. She would like to go up there and visit friends. See her dad's grave. Being retired we have the freedom to take a two month trip and go. With the motorhome we have a condo on wheels with us. No packing and unpacking of suitcases. It is a fabulous way to travel.
At the beginning of summer, my two sisters and I would travel together as 'Unaccompanied Minors' on an airline from Canada to Sweden (or Norway) where we'd hang out for two weeks with our cousins hiking and windsurfing.
Then in the last two weeks of summer, our cousins would fly 'Unaccompanied' over to Canada where they'd all stay at my parent's tobacco farm with us which is right in the middle of the Great Lakes Region of Ontario. We'd hang out at the white sand beaches playing beach volleyball until summer finally ended and school would begin again.
My parents never traveled with us as adolescents, but instead took advantage of the opportunity to ship us out of town for a couple of weeks!
