Why do people choose to learn and speak such difficult languages like Urdu instead of something easy to understand like American ?

I think about the American language quite often when I am doing crosswords. (I do them in my car every Friday while I am waiting for our local food pantry to open.)

When I look at the clues, and guess at the words, I realize that almost every word we use has at least two or three different meanings, depending on context.

I don't think a non-American-English-speaking person could DO a crossword.

I assume EVERY language has the same twists and turns, but for Pete's sake, don't bother learning a difficult language unless you can use it in daily life. Immersion is the ONLY way to really learn languages like a native.

Not sure about wanting to speak American. I'll just stick to English, thanks. (I'm learning Italian)

@jackieash Wise, very wise ;)

I have not heard that American English is easy to learn, but if one chooses to learn a language, I would assume they plan on visiting or moving to a place where it is spoken.
Nimbus · M
@AbbeyRhode Not as a hobby then?
AbbeyRhode · F
@Nimbus I suppose someone with the time to learn different languages could do it for fun.
gregloa · 61-69, M
I speak Texan.
Nimbus · M
@gregloa Yay!
A great state :)

Knowing more than one language is useful. You can keep your conversations more private when you use a lesser-used language.
Nimbus · M
@cherokeepatti I must remember that ;)
YoMomma ·
Why not? Lol

If you read read as red instead of reed then you read read wrong but if you read the third read as reed instead of red then you read that read wrong as well.

Why is American easy to understand? Do you think English is easy to understand?
Nimbus · M
@MissBarbara It is for natives.
MissBarbara · 61-69
@Nimbus I always thought so, but having seen some of the posts and comments on this site I'm beginning to wonder.
