Yes. It was once state to state long distance charges. Then new zone numbers were added and it was possible to be long distance to call a neighbor. The phone company was today's cable Mafia of yesterday.

@Bluebirdsonmyshoulder It was one of the first available computers. Apple 2 Plus. It had 16mb ram, no hard drive, but you could add a tape recorder, and it would play on a TV using an analog VHF connector. It came with Basic as the language.
