I did it with ancestry. It confirmed that my one grandmother that I didn't meet cheated lol my other grandmother and mom floated the idea of her infidelity but got weird when I asked again about it so I did ancestry and sure enough I'm part African

@SkeetSkeet they initially said my one grandfather was Sicilian but I looked up Sicilian and it didn't make sense

@deadgerbil It’s crazy to me how they hid from you that you were partially black 😂
@SW-User There are more people nowadays, who are accused of suddenly being black

I have done it with MyHeritage and the results were not too surprising.
I do actively research my ancestors through various sites and was able to trace some back to the early 14th. Century. An interesting but time consuming occupation.

@Stephie oh wow, that’s awesome!

@SW-User I have been doing ancestry research for 3 years now and boy, is it ever complicated. The records, as collected by familysearch.com are unreliable, not because they do a bad job collecting them but because the priests that did record the data were barely able to write and did partially a miserable job.
Women were seldom recorded by their maiden names but often by "wife of XYZ" or just by their first names.

My results were kinda surprising based on the extensive genealogy work that has been done on my family. I guess it is due to difficulties in sampling certain populations, you get some strange results. I did ancestry.

I've been thinking about it because I don't know my bio father but maybe someday.

@Samek I feel you

I did 23 and me. Very interesting results!
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Yes. I keep hoping I'll find a close relative. I'm adopted with no info on my birth family. I WAS a b it disappointed with the ethnicity thing -- I was hoping for some significant Neanderthal background, just for something to talk about.

I did Ancestry and Family Tree DNA. Results were similar. FTDNA provided more in-depth data than Ancestry.
Jenny1234 · 56-60, F
I did both ancestry and 23&me. I liked 22&me better because it also gives you information about your traits.

SW-User
@Jenny1234 oh cool, I can’t wait for the results

I'm a bit of everything. apparently my people liked to travel and f**k

I'd only consider doing these sort of tests if (a) and de-identified data was only ever stored in Australia and (b) I can request that after testing is done and results are provided *all* data about me including the testing outcomes is deleted so to the 'system' it looks like I don't exist.
I don't want my personal (de-identified or not) DNA data being stolen in a data breach and used for malicious purposes by either a government or shady business like insurance or medical industries.

myheritage; only confirmed what I already knew; German, Scandinavian on fathers side/Scottish, Cherokee, etc. on mothers
Yep- ancestry, mostly Irish and Scandinavian (to be expected). But also some Iberian coast and middle east.
Northwest · M
I did. Confirmed what I already knew: Scandinavian and European Western Mediterranean.

You're more trusting than I am.

Ancestry stores your DNA information in some faceless Chinese database allegedly.
Never heard of 23. Do you mean '23 and me'? They were the subject of a big data breach in 2023 where about half (around 7 million) of their customer's data.
