What would you think

If you met a potential romantic partner and he/she cut ties with their family.
Would that be a red flag immediately?

My relationship with my family isn't the greatest and i've been thinking about cutting them out of my life. But i'm wondering if people would think badly of me.
Elessar · 26-30, M
Nope, it wouldn't be one. But still, it would be better to have at least a network of friends for support, and not to rely on the partner for everything since that often ends poorly
Girlbehindthecurtain · 31-35, F
@Elessar i'd not do that.that'd be very unhealthy

I've never obliged a potential partner to sit an in-depth examination on their relationship with their family before deciding it was safe to fall in love with them.
Louis54 · 61-69, M
@ArtieKat How hopelessly irresponsible of you! You actually let your feelings decide?
sfish007 · 61-69, M
To me it would not be... Everyone has issues with family in some way - and some families, or members of a family can be toxic.. I know during covid - people were polarized.. There is also history of abuse and family doing things that were uncalled for when someone passed... i feel if the family is not good for one's soul, they are better off, and will make a better partner if they have the strength to shut out bad people / bad influences from their life.
Not necessarily. People might have very good reason to cut ties with family.
BobbyMoeven · 51-55, M
I think that would be received with great relief ..

I mean my partner's family is great ....

But mine not so great in parts ...

Attending to family matters outside your own in a relationship is mostly just a chore ..

It sucks that your family is volatile to the point of cutting ties ...but I most people understand that family can be a burden and would fully be accepting ..

It didn't cross my mind to be a red flag but it could be seen as weaker position in his/her eyes based on the concept "your own blood couldn't tolerate but I do". The other side of the coin is "you couldn't tolerate your own blood, you'll bail on me at the first turn", maybe that's a red flag
ratpaws · 18-21, F
context does matter, more of how the "cutting ties" go or relationship with family

one of my cousins (f 18yo) escaped from house with his newly met boyfriend (25 yo)....
the reason? she came up late to her house like 4-5 AM and her mom was obviously upset due to the late hours and literally as said, she took her things and started living with this guy on somewhere very precarious place
she might have her reasonings but thats the dumbest way to go and put everyone on a wtf stance after hearing why was that

Aside, if your family has a toxic enviroment or just bad, i will understand decision as people will back you up if you tell them that uh idk, the family was breaking at core and there was a point of no return in which you had to cut ties
Oceanfire · 41-45, M
I think it would be a small red flag if you didn't talk to any family at all. As opposed to just certain family members. Although if your reasons were good I don't think it would be a deal-breaker for anyone.

No. My wife cut all ties with her mother in 1983 and hasn't seen or talked to her since. June will make 34 years we have been together and we are very happy. 🙂
luckranger71 · 51-55, M
Something to keep in mind, but it's not necessarily a red flag without knowing more about their family.
robertsnj · 56-60, M
What do your SO ask about your family? Does he show an interest in them? You could diminish contact with your family from your current level to zero over time at a pace you chose. It won't look as dramatic as your zero-60 approach of "cut ties"

Are you comfortable telling us what is going on between you and your family? Why you want to eliminate contact with them?
Girlbehindthecurtain · 31-35, F
@robertsnj i do not really want to talk about it,don't want to think about it anymore.too tired of crying about it
robertsnj · 56-60, M
@Girlbehindthecurtain I am sorry - hugs
Tracos · 51-55, M
Not for me. I'd rather see people cut ties than suffer the toxicity some families provide
Magenta · F
No, it wouldn't be a red flag to moi. But I would want to know and understand why.
Pretzel · 61-69, M
I've cut off much of my family

there's a reason for it
PleasurePunch · 100+
a red flag if they cut ME off.

lol
2slick2envy · 36-40, C
It will depend on their reason
It depends on the reason, but without more details I'd lean towards it being a green flag. It likely means they know their worth and won't let societal standards violate that.
