@helenS Alcohol laws vary by state, and in some states by county or even local jurisdiction. But they affect the sale of alcohol, not the consumption. So, yes, there are some counties where the sale is prohibited; some states where you can only buy from State operated stores; and, the legal age for consumption may vary. Some to the point of absurdity. I remember in one state it used to be if you were sitting at a bar with a drink, and your table became ready or someone invited you to join them at their table, you could not carry your own drink. A paid employee had to bring your drink from the bar to the table.
@IM5688 @Nimbus Well, foreign affairs is never easy because it requires finding areas of commonality and compromise with vastly different cultural, governmental, and economic systems rather than dictating as if you are the world's supreme authority. Compared to the lead up to WWII, WWII itself, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Iraqi boondoggle, the Cold War, the Generational Gap and Anti-War Protests of the 60's -- I think we have a ways to go before saying it a total mess. But then not all of us have been around the block as many times or have been open to learning from past history.
@HumanEarth @Nimbus You mean Detroit planned obsolescent cars have not gotten better? Since the Japanese showed the world how quality control could improve production and the longevity of vehicles, most other vehicles have improved dramatically. My 12 year old Prius just needed a repair and it was still covered under warranty. Try to find a Detroit-made behemoth that is still running after 12 years, let alone still under warranty.
If you mean you can't fix them with a screwdriver and a wrench yourself, it is a tradeoff for not needing repairs as often.
If you lived in the 70's -- probably unlikely you were old enough to have paid attention if you were -- there was real inflation and yes it did come down. And taxes are much lower (which is why the schools and infrastructure has gone to hell with the tax revolt and Starve The Beast fiascos).
Price of gasoline is rightly up. It is not a renewable source, and with scarcity the basic oil price goes up. Factor in the increased gasoline taxes to replace other lost tax resources for the roads, the cost of additional refining standards to reduce smog the vehicles produce, and the fact that U.S. gasoline prices were always far below the real costs in other countries, thanks to federal tax loopholes.
