Have you ever seen your parents cry?

GLITTER · 36-40, F
My dad once because our dog died and he had to pick him up once he had been put down and he brought him back home to bury him and he was crying as he brought him into the garden

My mum a few times, mainly now I’m older and we talk about stuff. I never once saw her cry when I was little. And considering my dad cheated on her and left her, she was immensely strong to not let us see how much it upset her

@Gangstress @ImRileyTheDog I don't really think it is out of respect or choice of your father's "vulnerability" showing. I watched my grandfather slowly whither away from Parkinson's over a 15 yr period. It was also the only time I ever saw him cry. It was in the later stages of his life/ affliction that it occured. I think it is from loosing the ability to control their life and situation and the harsh reality of that.

I hate to say this ....but , it gets worse. In the really advanced stages they are no longer able to communicate because of the deterioration of there bodies strength and muscle control. This was the hardest part for me, and I can't imagine what kind of heart breaking , living night mare it had to be for my grandfather.

When visiting him and trying to talk to him, you could see the pain, frustration and sorrow in his eyes not being able to communicate with you. It is like he was trapped in a prison and wanted to get out. You could see he was trying to engage you , his lips would move but his body was to far gone to do what he wanted it to do. That is truly heartbreaking.

Just a thought, but while you can engage him and learn more about each other and more about his life especially. I know it a nightmarish affliction , and one of the demons that I battle as well. It is also a gift that gives you the chance to become closer and learn more about the man. Even though it is robbing you and your family and friends of time with him. It is a gift knowing his expiration date is coming and giving you the gift of time to make the most it and do something with it. Best wishes .

@Gangstress I apologize greatly for that ! That was not my intent .
And after the way you explained it, I am sure you are correct in his reasons for exposing his vulnerability to you.
Gangstress · 41-45, F
@goodlil666 oh whatever, you chose not to ask, so thanks for exposing me like that - but that's sw for you, assumptions on a very vague comment.

keep your sorry I don't need it

Yeh my dad has parkinsons and depression sets in. He cries when i talk to him sometimes. Ive never had an emotional relationship with him but its nice to see that he can and chooses to be vulnerable in front of me.
Its actually a massive mark of respect for me which i never felt growing up

DrWatson · 70-79, M
@pentacorn Your reply got me thinking: has my daughter ever seen me cry? I don't think she has, even though I consider myself an "emotional dude" as well.
pentacorn · F
@DrWatson i think the emotional connections are just as powerful without tears. my dad just had very active tear ducts ;)
DrWatson · 70-79, M
@pentacorn I agree! (Well, about the emotional connections, that is. I can't speak about your dad's tear ducts!)

The first time I saw my mother cry was on my 7th birthday when we were standing in front of the smoldering ruins of our house that had just burned to the ground. The next time was years later when I moved my young family 800 miles away.

I remember my mom crying when I was 11 because she was a raging alcoholic and my dad would not give her more money to buy beer.

I never saw her cry about anything important. I never saw my dad cry about anything.

What about you @ImRileyTheDog
