Yes, but at the same time, the issue is more complex than that. Who is in control of the healthcare system? Is it still run by hospitals or will it be socialized and run by the Government? In that case, if they are, would they have the right to tell me what I should do with my health?
@checkoutanytime A healthy population is a national security issue. The US was running out of manpower in WWII because so many people were in poor physical health. That is why all Presidents, except for a couple, since the war have pushed for a strong national health care plan.
A sick population is more of a burden than a healthy one supported by national taxes. A sick population will destroy a nation faster than the tax burden to keep them well will.
But, like all social issues in America, resistance to a strong health care program for all is based upon racism and prejudice. Some people get upset at the idea that a dollar of their tax money will help Black people and other minorities. You saw that when Reagan refused to help fight AIDS.
Government health care = long waiting lists (see: Canada), preferential treatment for the well-connected, stuff like that. What happens when the number of people getting "free" health care exceeds the number paying the taxes for it? It's not the panacea it's made out to be. US health care has its own problems but I'm not sure a government takeover would produce the desired results.
