My mother specialises in keeping things she doesn't need and isn't sure she wants but trusts that in 30+ (heaven willing) years time her daughters will sort out for her, and save her the bother...

Kind of imagine what you're doing through!!! Good luck with the move xx

Try after 38 years. I donated 35 boxes of books to the library's second hand book store just to begin with, and still had a couple dozen boxes of those I couldn't part with. Fortunately the realtors helped in finding buyers for some of the stuff that was truly antique, that had actually come with the house when we bought it. Some stuff we just made a condition of the sale -- buyer had to accept the piano in the atrium and the mahogany desk in the loft office. No way we were getting involved with or paying having those lugged down all the stairs. We our part getting them up there.
Just think how happy you'll be when it's done

I've been thinking about this myself. I'll have much more to pack once my lease is up. Plan on moving in a couple months. Trying to actually use things I have before buying new things and getting rid of clothes, decor etc that I'm not using

Yeah but having no house to move to sucks more I guess. Good luck.

Are you retiring? That could be exciting - going someplace where it’s always summer and you can walk in the beach.
Nelisme · 22-25, F
@Musicman I bet you are. I love love love the beach.
Livingwell · 61-69, M
@Nelisme I'm retiring to a small town outside of the city.
Nelisme · 22-25, F
@Livingwell well, I wish you luck. Will be nice to get away I’m sure.

I packed and moved and had yard sales and downsized five times between 2008 and 2016. It's exhausting. We put a lot of energy into accumulating things...makes you think, doesn't it? Things you can't keep.
Fungirlmmm · 51-55, F
Just think that some poor bastard will have to clean up after you in your next downsize of earthly residence because not a lot is gonna fit in that coffin lol. Feel better now? :) youre welcome.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
I have been working on my garage for a week. Was accumulating things for a yard sale that kept getting put off. Have cleared out about half of the contents and need to do more. Gave the most to a local thrift store but also some things to my neighbor and some others I know from a previous job….and got rid of a lot of boxes too
Livingwell · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti I did the same thing. Half went to the dump. The other halo to goodwill.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Livingwell there’s two thrift stores owned by the same couple and they use some of their proceeds for community charity. Made it easier to
Part with things that way

They say a move is almost as traumatic at a divorce. We bought the land in '73. Built the house in'78 and extended it twice to avoid moving. Still there. The kids are going to have a job cleaning it out after we are gone..😷

I moved a couple years ago after living in a house for a long time and got rid of so much stuff. I have no idea why I kept it all. I didn't get rid of any tools though.
smiler2012 · 56-60
{@livingwell] yes very true a pain indeed but all part of the great taperstry of life moving
DemureDeb · 56-60, F
Ugh! That's a project I still have to do some Saturday with my hubby that I don't look forward to. Good job!
I hear you.

What I thought would be a a quick clear out, was an epic undertaking.
32 years worth!
FlowersNButterflies · 61-69, F
I agree moves are traumatic. Can't believe how often I have done it.
updown2020 · 61-69, M
Well make sure you change the locks in the place.
Just move your stuff, don't try to move the house!
PhilDeep · 51-55, M
