Was there really almost a nuclear war back in 1995?

I was reading about a situation called the Norwegian rocket incident/Black Brant scare. Basically, Russia mistaked a rocket that was launched by Norway and the U.S. to study the Aurora Borealis, for a U.S. Navy Trident missile and started freaking out. So Russia's president was ready to press the button to hit a retaliatory nuclear strike against the U.S., until it was determined that the missile was just a harmless rocket. I would have only been six years old when this happened and I don't remember it at all.

I suspect this is only one of the times misunderstandings have brought us close to disaster. But while I don't remember being aware of the 1995 almost-incident, I read about it later.

In 1983 there was also a close brush with mutual destruction when Russia was regrouping after their political collapse and was afraid the US was going to take advantage of their vulnerability. Coupled with a confused and disjointed internal command structure in Russia (who has the authority to act in the event of an act of war?), we came too close for comfort again.

Right now, with shifting and jumbled alliances, our executive and military branches had better tread carefully to avoid waking the nuclear threat tiger again.

It appears to be a National version of "If I can't have her (Earth), then nobody will."

If Trump had remained US president there would definitely be a war with China and/or North Korea by now, and both of those countries are affiliated with Russia/USSR/whatever due to their shared re.ligio-political ideologies.

I read about this years ago. We were just seconds away from World War III, apparently.
