What do you think of automakers discontinuing cars, to focus on trucks/suv's?

Do you think it's a good business decision? It's mainly Ford and GM, by the way.

A few years of sales will tell .. seems all of the makers are offering more suv/ cuv options and their car sales are declining. Our household hasn't owned a car in 12 years .. one truck, a van and 4 suvs since our last car.

Automakers like to sell SUVs and trucks because they get more profits from them than sedans. But, unless you have several people to transport or need to move cargo, a sedan is much more practical, gets much better mileage. Most people commute to work alone. A sedan is much more efficient and comfortable for that.

@badminton Trucks/SUV's/CUV's do seem to hold their value a lot better than sedans though, and don't depreciate as much in their first year of ownership.
@badminton Driving to work is only one use of a vehicle .. and suvs only sit another passenger or so over same size class range of sedan. Some people work from home and or take public transit so they buy what they like or need for other purposes. Few cars can pull a trailer or boat or haul much in way of materials for projects, etc.

While it may be a sound business decision, 98% of the people who own trucks NEVER USE THEM TO HAUL ANYTHING IN THE BACK. They buy them to be trendy and cool, most of them not realizing that according to the insurance industry, a truck is 1 step down from a sports car.

it's a yikes decision. they're going to get beat by foreign car companies

If noone is buying them, I can't blame the companies for not willing to sell them anymore.

The best selling car in Oz last year was the Toyota Hi Lux.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
@whowasthatmaskedman Our best selling vehicle here in the United States this year happened to be the Ford F-150.

They can’t compete with imports for the small car market.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
@slobound I would definitely say so.
Spokeskitties75 · 46-50, M
I don’t think they should give up market share to the German and Japanese automakers
MizzBella · 31-35, T
Because it's what people want
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
@MizzBella Trucks and SUV's are expensive as heck though. Not everyone wants to spend $30,000+ on a vehicle, and some can't afford to if they wanted.
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
It doesn't sound good to me.

It's business

Stupid, but whatever

That seems to be Ford’s basic MO...if you can’t fix it, fuck it 🤷‍♂️
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@SubstantialKick I'm not surprised, considering they stopped making their best cars years ago.
SubstantialKick · 36-40, M
@NankerPhelge I guess that may be one reason that Ford/Chrysler/GM cars depreciate like crazy...
NankerPhelge · 61-69, M
@SubstantialKick All the more reason to make more of them, so that they can be replaced easily and people can continue to drive more of the same.
