Everyone has those recurring bad dreams … what is your nightmare?

Mine is driving across a bridge that spans a deep gorge and suddenly there I am in my car, going through the railing and floating down into oblivion... I always awake right before I crash into the boulder strewn ground. It hits me every now and again and started as best I can remember, in my 20's or maybe early 30's.

My nightmares are (almost) always work-related these days. Usually something terrible (and sometimes all too believable) has gone wrong on some project or other -- and it's all my fault. Or at least it's all up to me to fix.

Fortunately, there's usually a scaly green alien involved somehow, so I realize it's a dream. Otherwise, it's my life.

It's not exactly a nightmare but I hate that very short dream where I see+feel that I'm falling then wake up. Mostly happens as I "fall" asleep, like literally. Lol
Ontheroad · M
@SW-User Interesting that you dream of falling when you are falling asleep. Have to wonder if there is a connection.
SW-User
I’ve read they’re called hypnic jerks or sleep starts and they’re fairly common. I too wonder if this is the reason why it’s called *falling* asleep in English. @Ontheroad

I used to have a similar dream a lot. I was standing on a rickety wooden slat bridge with no sides and i cant see the end or what's below. My fear of heights kicks in and i slowly get onto my knees and then end up laying on my front, my cheek pressed against the wood, just totally paralysed by fear and unable to move.
I used to get it a lot when i was in a pretty bad relationship. Since the relationship ended i haven't had the dream since. I often wonder if it was my subconscious picking up on my trapped feelings 🤷🏼‍♀️
Ontheroad · M
@RebelHeart Definitely sounds as if that is it.

I am driving a car as fast as I can. The car behind me keeps getting closer. A big angry wolf is driving. Suddenly I am running for my life. (Dreams are funny that way) The wolf's big blood dripping teeth are snapping at my legs. I can't run any faster. The wolf becomes my father and it's tearing at my legs. That is when I wake up screaming.
SweetMae · 70-79, F
@Ontheroad I don't have that nightmare now as much as I used to.
Ontheroad · M
@SweetMae At least there is that. Life is scary enough without having to be that scared when you sleep. Mine seems to come in waves. I'll get it a few times and then it can be a year or more before I get another wave.
REMsleep · 41-45, F
@SweetMae Wow that one I can literally see and its very scary and the fact that its your father means something too. Especially because maybe your father is no good and the wolf turned out to be your father.

I used to have a similar nightmare at times...driving a little too fast on the high suspended looping overpasses that connect Boston to New Hampshire or Maine and suddenly the road just...ends...and you have a moment of sheer horror while you go over the edge, right before you wake up.
Ontheroad · M
@4meAndyou so, a specific and real bridge. Maybe you were in a car on that bridge when you were young and it frightened you? I don't put much faith in the idea that dreams have meaning, but maybe.
4meAndyou · F
@Ontheroad 🤣 Nope..I was on that bridge and overpass when the ex was driving and it traumatized me for a long time. I started having a fear of heights right around then.
Ontheroad · M
@4meAndyou Okay, that makes perfect sense.

I have had that reoccurring dream of driving off a bridge also driving into a tree.
Ontheroad · M
@SW-User I'm seeing this theme seems to be fairly common... maybe we all need a Dreamcatcher? 😉
SW-User
@Ontheroad oh yes
rrraksamam · 31-35, M
I've had varieties of the same dream. But not the same exact dream recurring.
Ontheroad · M
@rrraksamam Yeah, others are reporting having some variety of it.

I had a recurring nightmare in my teens that involved driving on a winding mountain road with my girlfriend when a logging truck comes around a blind curve and knocks us down the mountain. I figured, "Okay, I'll stay off mountain roads." Then my girlfriend went to a college in the mountains, so every date involved driving on winding mountain roads. Oh crap!

@SW-User So are you fearful during the dream?

@SW-User That's cool, I don't know, or at least can't remember any dreams like that.
There will be some major changes coming to your life.
Ontheroad · M
@CookieCrumbs More?!?!? I need to message whoever is in charge of those changes... I've had plenty, thank you. Please resubmit in 20 years.😁
@Ontheroad
Dreams recur until you get the “message.”
Ontheroad · M
@CookieCrumbs Geez! Now I'm evidently a dimwit! Oh well, I'm a happy dimwit, so that's something.
I had a weird dream last week about Putin. I never dream about politics, world leaders, etc.
A tornado following me, trying to find somebody in my family.
My longest reoccurring nightmare (though I rarely dream now) was walking outside with loved ones, and then suddenly finding myself completely alone on a desolate, badly lit street. It’s night and I have no idea where I am and how to get home. Probably doesn’t take much imagination to conclude that it’s a fear of being abandoned. As a child it terrified me, now I just wake up feeling rather sad. 🥺
Ontheroad · M
@bijouxbroussard Still, even if it's just sad, it's not a fun dream. I feel like that's worse than mine... feeling abandoned is a special kind of loneliness.

cannot say i have bad recurrent dreams but recurrent of ;people from my past from work and who are sadly no longer around [ontheroad]
REMsleep · 41-45, F
-One Ive had since childhood is that my dad is allowing some man to have his way with me. Don't worry it never actually happens but its just like I'll overhear his drinking buddy say that he's going to do such and such to me and my dad just laughs and says sure why not?
In my dream Im angry hurt and all of that.
- Other one more common for me is doomsday, Armageddon, Zombie Apocalypse type events always running in a crowd trying to find my husband or wishing that phones lines still worked so that I can see if mom is still alive.
I'm always seeking weapons and sometimes people die right in front of me or someone steals my food. Always alot of anxiety and trying to escape something.
I don't have recurring bad dreams.
